There is live Premier League action from the Hawthorns on Monday night as West Brom welcome struggling Southampton to the Midlands. Albion have enjoyed a fine start to the season, despite a couple of unfortunate defeats recently, and they start odds on favourites against a Southampton team that have been breaking records for the wrong reasons.
The Saints have conceded 26 goals in their opening nine games in the top-flight and that is the worst defensive record of any team at this stage of the season in Premier League history, so it is no surprise to see they are 4/1 underdogs in the match odds with Bet 365. West Brom go in as 7/10 odds on favourites, while the draw is 11/4, as manager Steve Clarke bids to get his team back on the winning trail.
West Brom had started the season by winning four and drawing two of their opening seven league games, although they have conceded 90th minute goals in their last two outings as they fell to successive 2-1 defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle respectively. Late goals have been something of a feature of the Baggies' matches this season as there have been 11 goals scored in the last 10 minutes of their 11 games in all competitions, including four in the 90th minute, with B365 offering 5/6 for a goal to be scored after 74:59 on Monday.
Clarke's team have had the happy knack of grabbing the first goal of games though and Shane Long has been in fine form with five goals. The Republic of Ireland striker has opened the scoring in three matches already and he looks a decent punt to be first goalscorer at a best price 11/2.
Long and co. will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet and it is no surprise to see that over 2.5 goals in the game is 13/20 odds on. That is thanks in large part to the dismal defensive efforts of Southampton, who have conceded 16 in their four away league games alone.
It is those defensive woes that are likely to ensure Southampton are in a relegation scrap for much of the season and the pressure is increasing on manager Nigel Adkins. He saw his side produce a dismal first-half effort in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend before they were hammered 3-0 by Championship outfit Leeds in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.
That sort of form doesn't bode well for their trip to the Hawthorns, although the second half performance of Adam Lallana when playing behind the front two against Tottenham has been a rare highlight. Lallana has been hugely impressive this season and he offers enough of a goal threat for the 4/1 on offer for him to score anytime look very tempting indeed.
Saints may be unbeaten in the last seven West Brom v Southampton matches but their recent form makes them tough to back and West Brom look worthy favourites at this stage, with B365 offering 12/1 for Albion to win 3-1.
