Wayne Rooney Odds to be Top World Cup Goalscorer look too good to miss

Few could argue that there are many better strikers in World Football right now than Manchester United and England Striker, Wayne Rooney. The Premier League's current top goalscorer is in the midst of the best season of his career, having already surpassed his previous best goals tally with a total of 28 goals in all competitions to date and with ten Premiership games plus Champions League matches remaining, there is no knowing where he will stop!

England fans will be hoping that Rooney can continue his fine goalscoring form into the World Cup in South Africa, where he is currently a best price of 14/1 to win the Golden Boot award. Only Coral are brave(or daft) enough to offer odds of 14/1 about Rooney being the top goalscorer at the World Cup and with all other bookmakers offering odds between 10/1 and 12/1, this looks like an opportunity too good to miss. Both Totesport and Sportingbet were also offering 14/1 prior to Rooney netting the winner in the Carling Cup Final but have since been forced to cut those odds and it won't be long before Coral are forced to do the same.

Even though his place in the England starting XI at the World Cup is a given, it is Rooney's hunger for the game that will ensure he will want to continue to impress England boss, Fabio Capello, as well as fire United to Premier League and Champions League success.

If Rooney is to stand a chance of winning the Golden Boot in South Africa, history suggests that he'll need to score around six goals (five of the past seven Golden Boot winners scored six) to be in with a chance of wining. Just one look at England's group opponents, Slovenia, Algeria and USA, should have Rooney eyeing up at least three or four goals before a realistic trip to either the Quarter or Semi Finals for England should see him in with a chance of bagging a couple more, which would put him in with a great chance of winning this prestigious award. If nothing else, the odds of 9/4 about him being England's top World Cup scorer with any of Bet365, Stan James or William Hill looks a cracking bet. What's more, backing Rooney will also give patriotic punters plenty to shout about when England play!

Other hopefuls for the Golden shoe include Spain's striking duo of David Villa and Fernando Torres, both of whom pose a big threat to Rooney's challenge but may have to settle for sharing the goals between themselves. Brazil's Fabiano is another at the head of the betting and is sure to get amongst the goals, but with his team in the so-called 'group of death' and 2010 being his first appearance at a World Cup, you could not back the Seville striker with any great confidence. Germany's Miroslav Klose, who top scored in the 2006 World Cup could be the biggest danger at odds of 28/1.

However, no matter how hard you try, it is difficult to look beyond Rooney in the top scorer market. He is in the form of his life, has experience at major competitions, allbeit blighted by injury which may make him that all the bit more hungry and with his natural appetite for the game together with his role as England's number one striker, it is hard to see him not having a big imapct in South Africa.
