England's odds of winning Euro 2012 were clipped right in following the group stage draw for next summer's European Championships in Poland and Ukraine. Fabio Capello's men were drawn alongside France, Ukraine and Sweden in Group D and they are now 8/1 to win the tournament, while Spain consolidated their position as favourites at 12/5 with Bet 365.
Republic of Ireland failed to enjoy the luck of the Irish though as they suffered a tough draw in Group C, where they are set to face tournament favourites Spain, Italy and Croatia. As a result Giovanni Trapattoni's men drifted from 50/1 to 66/1 to win Euro 2012.
England though will be delighted with the draw as they come up against the French, who struggled to qualify for the European Championship finals, in their first match of the tournament on June 11th. The bookies are struggling to separate the two sides in the odds on who will win Group D though, with B365 favouring England at 13/8, with France priced a touch further back at 15/8, while tournament co-hosts Ukraine are 4/1 and Sweden are 11/2.
It looks a big ask for Republic of Ireland to get out of Group C as they take on the World and European champions Spain. They take on Croatia in their opening match of the tournament on 8th June and that looks like a good chance to get three points on the board early. It is their first appearance at a major finals since 2002 and they are currently 11/1 to win Group C, with Spain the overwhelming favourites at 8/13 odds on, while Italy are priced 3/1 by Bet 365.
It could have been worse for Republic of Ireland and England as they did at least manage to avoid the dreaded 'group of death'. It is Group B that undoubtedly takes that mantle this year as Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark were all drawn together. Germany, second favourites to win Euro 2012 outright, and Netherlands, third favourites to win outright, both drifted in the odds as a result.
Germany are now available at 10/3 to win next summer's Championships and 5/4 to win Group B after Joachim Low's side impressed at the 2010 World Cup, while Netherlands are 15/2 to win outright and 15/8 to finish top of Group B according to Bet365.com. It leaves Portugal with a huge task to qualify and they are 4/1 to top Group B, while Denmark are a big 10/1 to upset the odds and head the group.
Meanwhile Group A saw tournament co-hosts Poland drawn alongside Russia, Czech Republic and Greece in what looks to be the weakest group of the four. However, few will forget Greece's amazing efforts to win Euro 2004 and B365 price them 66/1 to repeat the feat next summer.
Ultimately, it is Spain who remain the team to beat, but there looks to be some cracking matches in prospect and if Germany and Holland can get out of the 'group of death' they look to have real claims for the title. For England, they will be expected to reach the quarter-finals once again, while Republic of Ireland will look to upset the odds.
