Scotland v Czech Republic Odds: Charlie Adam a good bet to score first

Scotland welcome the Czech Republic to Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon knowing they must win to realistically stand any chance of getting into a play-off for the European Championships next year. The Scots have just four points from four games in Group I, which leaves them in third place in the table, five points behind Saturday's opponents. A win for Craig Levein's side would leave them just two points adrift of the Czech's in second place, but with a game in hand against Lithuania next Tuesday in Glasgow. With both teams still yet to play group leaders Spain in their remaining games, Scotland must realistically beat the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Liechtenstein to stand a chance of qualifying for Euro 2012 via a possible play-off as one of the best runners-up.

Scotland have struggled during this campaign, with just the one win to their name, a stuttering 2-1 victory over Group I whipping boys Liechtenstein at Hampden last year. A draw away at Lithuania on the opening matchday of the group stages is where Graig Levein's side got their only other point and are winless in their last two group games, albeit both played in 2010. The 1-0 defeat away in the Czech Republic was much maligned as Levein set up his team without a recognised striker in the team, but there was hope as the Scots played with the shackles off in a credible 2-3 defeat to the World and European Champions Spain last October.

The Scots have had some good results in 2011 although none of which you could call in really competitive surroundings. A 3-0 win against Northern Ireland in the four nations tournament in Dublin was followed up with a 3-1 win against Wales, before losing 1-0 to the Republic in the final. There was a friendly defeat to Brazil before a decent 2-1 win against Denmark most recently and one which may give Scottish punters reason to back their side this Saturday.

Scotland have been priced up as 6/4 favourites for this match by bookmaker Bet365, with the Czech Reblic 15/8 and the draw 11/5. The visitors aren't as strong as they have been in previous years and will be missing Petr Cech in goal. The win over Scotland earlier in the campaign was matched with home and away wins over Liechtenstein but they did come a cropper versus Spain and surprisingly lost at home to Lithuania twelve months ago.

With the liklihood of Kenny Miller playing a loan role up front for Scotland, it's no surprise that he is the 11/2 favourite to score first at the weekend. There might be more value however backing Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam in the same market at odds of 17/2 with Bet 365. Adam is the penalty taker for the national side and can also take a mean free-kick.

With a draw all that is required for the Czech Republic to realistically finish second place in the group, we can expect them to take a reasonably cautious approach, so the draw at 11/5 makes some appeal and with the lack of potency for both sides, backing under 2.5 goals at 1/2 can also reap rewards with Bet365
