Lithuania host Scotland in this Euro 2012 Group I qualifier in Kaunas on Friday with both teams knowing that nothing less than three points will be needed if either team are to realistically challenge for eventual inclusion in Poland-Ukraine 2012. The Bookmakers are finding it hard to split the two sides in the betting, with Ladbrokes offering 6/4 about a Lithuanian win and a best price of 7/4 for Scotland with the draw being a 23/10 option.
Lithuania v Scotland LIVE on BBC Scotland on Friday @ 1915
The two teams are no strangers to each other, having met in both the Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 qualifying stages, the last time Scotland visited Lithuania in fact they came away with a 2-1 win; a result that boss, Craig Levein would be well content with this time around. Of course with Group I containing world champions, Spain as well as a very good looking Czech Republic team, it is no surprise to see both teams with only outside chances of winning the Group, although Scotland are not totally written off from qualifying with odds of around 10/3.
Euro 2012 Group I Odds Comparison
Scotland travel to the match without several regular players, including key defender Craig Gordon, as well as Lee Wallace, Andy Webster and Kevin MacNaughton. However, they do have the in form Rangers striker, Kenny Miller on board, who has scored five goals in his last five games and who looks a good bet at 7/1 with ladbrokes to score the opening goal of the match and does not look a bad bet at 11/5 with the same Bookmaker to score at anytime during the match.
Several of the Lithuanian players are very well known in Scotland of course, with a few having been at Hearts, including Saulius Mikoliunas, the man whose blatant dive at Hampden Park in 2007 earned his team a penalty which ultimately denied Scotland victory thus ending hopes of Euro 2008 qualification. Mikoliunas is in the squad for this match, but the danger man surely has to be Tomas Danilevicius, who is Lithuania’s leading goalscorer of all time. The big striker who has 17 goals in 54 internationals is favourite to score the opening goal of the match with odds of 5/1 from Ladbrokes.com
This is a difficult match for both teams, particularly as both only have slim chances of getting through to Euro 2012. Over the last few years a rivalry has clearly been built up between them which might make the game a little livelier than normal, but like the Bookmakers, we find it hard to separate them and our best advice to punters is to go for the scoring draw.
