England have been made massive odds on favourites for their opening Group G, Euro 2012 qualifier against a Bulgarian team, who these days are without their highest ever scoring striker, Dimitar Berbatov, who has retired from international football. The match which takes place at Wembley on Friday evening, will be the first of two quick group qualifying games for both teams, England face Switzerland in Berne next Wednesday, while Bulgaria entertain Montenegro on the same night. Paddy Power Bookmakers go 3/10 for an England win, 7/2 the draw and an almost cheeky 10/1 against Bulgaria winning the match.
England v Bulgaria LIVE on ITV 1 on Friday 3 September @ 2000
For Fabio Capello and his England team it is very much the first match on the road to some sort of redemption after a hugely disappointing World Cup finals campaign. Capello however will be telling his new look squad to think future and not past and that success can come in Euro 2012. England proved that they can qualify for finals after chalking up nine wins in ten games to get to the World Cup, they also scored the most goals in getting there which says plenty about their undoubted ability.
Bulgaria meanwhile have been going backwards for a number of years since the halcyon days of Stoichkov and co in the 90s. They have lost three from their last four matches and have lost five matches from their last seven played away from home, which should give punters some idea of why England are such hot favourites.

England will be without several of their established stars, such as John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe but on the plus side they have a number of untried players they will want to blood at international level who are thought to have big futures. However the most likely starting eleven will probably be built around a five man midfield made up from, Steven Gerard, Theo Walcott, Adam Johnson as the forward three with Gareth Barry and James Milner playing in front of the defence; this would leave and Wayne Rooney, as the lone striker up front. The central defensive pairing is almost certain to be Matthew Upson and Michael Dawson, with Cole and Carlton the fullbacks and Joe Hart ‘between the sticks’.
Euro 2012 Group G Odds Comparison
As the lone out and out striker and with nine goals scored in World Cup qualifying, it is little wonder that Rooney has been made favourite to score the opening goal in the match for which he has odds of 13/5 from paddypower. He is certainly hard to argue against, although if Gerrard gets forward as well as he can do then he is worth considering in the same market at 5/1.
It is interesting to take a look at England’s defensive stats under Capello, where it will be noted that they have only ever kept clean sheets in four of their thirteen matches played at Wembley. With Terry and Ferdinand both out and replaced with the relatively untried central defensive pairing of Upson and Dawson, England may just be vulnerable to conceding a goal in the game. Punters therefore might just want to take the 11/10 available from PaddyPower in the Both Teams to Score Market.
For our money its England all the way and we think that they can win this match by as many as three or four goals. The Correct Score we like the look of the most is a 4-1 England win which has extremely healthy odds of 18/1 also from paddypower
