Rangers' Champions League hopes hang in the balance after their first leg defeat to Malmo in their qualifier last week. They travel to Sweden for the second leg with Malmo at the Swedbank Stadium on Thursday night. The Scottish champions start as industry best priced 11/8 favourites for the match with Bet 365, with Malmo priced 15/8, but the draw could be worth backing at industry best odds of 12/5.
Malmo are 4/9 to qualify for the final round of qualifying after they won 1-0 at Ibrox last week and history is certainly on their side, while Rangers are 13/8 to make it through to the next round.
If Rangers are to make it through they will have to win an away match in Europe for the first time in twelve attempts. Furthermore, they have not come back from losing a home leg to win a European tie in 55 years and their cause isn't helped by the fact that they will have no fans to support them in Sweden. Rangers' fans have been banned from travelling following trouble with PSV Eindhoven in Europe last season.
It all looks an uphill struggle for Ally McCoist's men and the jury is still out on the man who replaced Walter Smith as manager at the end of last season. McCoist oversaw a dismal 1-1 draw with Hearts in his opening match in charge in the SPL and that was followed up by the defeat to Malmo.
There was finally a win to cheer at the weekend as Rangers beat a very poor St Johnstone side 2-0 and Steven Naismith notched his second goal in three appearances. The striker is available at tempting odds of 13/2 to be first goalscorer with Bet365.com on Thursday and that could be worth a look, although Nikica Jelavic is 9/2 favourite to strike first.
McCoist has vowed to attack Malmo, although the Swedish side are notorious for low scoring games. They have conceded 20 and scored just 16 in 17 matches in the Swedish League this season and under 2.5 goals is unsurprisingly 13/20 on.
Daniel Larsson notched the winner in last week's match and he is 13/2 to score first this week, although of more interest could be Dardan Rexhepi at 15/2. Rexhepi, a 19-year-old striker, had failed to score in 16 matches but he has looked in fine form of late, scoring two goals in his last four appearances.
The fact Malmo are well into their domestic season gives them the edge in terms of fitness and match practise, even if they are only ninth of sixteen in the league table. Rangers face a huge task to turn the tie around and the respective displays of the two sides in the first match last week makes the correct score of 1-1 very tempting at odds of 11/2.
