Tottenham and Wigan are back in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon as they go head-to-head at White Hart Lane. Both teams suffered heartache in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup in mid-week but they return to their 'bread and butter' of league football this weekend and Spurs start as odds on favourites.
Andre Villas-Boas's side are currently 2/5 on with Ladbrokes as they look to enhance their claims for a top-four finish this season. Wigan on the other hand are only concerned with avoiding relegation and they head into this match as a 7/1 chance, while the draw can be backed at 10/3.
Tottenham will be desperate go get back to winning ways after winning just one of their last four in all competitions, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Norwich in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. Gareth Bale got on the scoresheet again though as he made it two goals in his last two outings and the fact he has scored three in his last two in this Tottenham v Wigan fixture makes him a tempting 11/2 punt to be first goalscorer.
It is Jermain Defoe who starts as the 7/2 favourite to get the first goal as he has scored 11 goals in his last 10 against the Wigan, while be boasts the quirky stat of having scored more goals in November than any other player in Premier League history (16). Tottenham are likely to be boosted by the return of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Moussa Dembele on Saturday, but Emmanuel Adebayor is a doubt and Younes Kaboul and Scott Parker remain long-term injury absentees. Those injuries haven't affected Tottenham too badly as they find themselves in fourth place in the league table but their defence remains a worry.
Spurs have kept just three clean sheets all season, against Carlisle, goal-shy Aston Villa and a Lazio side who were happy to play for a draw, and Wigan look capable of getting on the scoresheet this weekend. Franco Di Santo has scored three goals for the Latics this term and he is 10/1 to be first goalscorer.
With Tottenham's defensive troubles in mind it could be worth backing both teams to score and Tottenham to win combined at 2/1, which would offer a bit more value than the outright match odds with Ladbrokes. Wigan certainly have their work cut out to get a result as they head into the game on the back of an embarrassing penalty shoot-out defeat to Bradford in the Capital One Cup.
Roberto Martinez must lift his players once more but the fact they have won just one of their last six against Spurs doesn't bode well. They lost 9-1 here three years ago and while a repeat scoreline seems unlikely Tottenham look good value for the win and the correct score of 2-1 could offer value at 15/2.
