The 2011/12 tournament saw Adrian Lewis retain his crown at Alexandra Palace as he beat Andy Hamilton 7-3 in the final. The often controversial figure beat Gary Anderson in the final in 2011 and became the first player to throw a nine-darter in a world final in the process.
The season before, Phil Taylor won an unheralded fifteenth PDC World Championship beating Simon Whitlock in the final at Alexandra Palace. Since the PDC split from the BDO in 1994, Taylor has astonishingly won all bar four of the seventeen finals to take place, making his a true legend of the sport.
The Professional Darts Association broke away from the BDO (British Darts Organisation) in 1992 and soon grasped the opportunity to be televised on Sky Sports television and today is considered by many to be the superior version of the sport in terms of darting talent and prize money.
Because of the money put into the game and the added television coverage, darts betting has become very popular with the bookmakers, with the likes of Ladbrokes currently sponsoring the World Championships.
