The draw for the first round of the PDC World Darts Championship has been made and it has been kind to World Championship holder Phil 'The Power' Taylor. The ante-post tournament favourite will face the winner of the preliminary match between Gary Mawson or Juanito Gionzon in the first round on Thursday 16th December. Taylor is odds on favourite to win the tournament at 8/15 with Ladbrokes bookmakers.
The World Championship at Alexandra Palace is the biggest tournament in the darts calendar and it is a life changing tournament for many as it is a £1 million event with the winner receiving £200,000. Taylor should know that more than most as he has reached a remarkable 16 out of 17 World Championship finals and is a 15 time World Champion.
Taylor defeated Simon Whitlock in the final last year and has recently been shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Such is the dominance of Taylor currently, you can bet on Taylor vs the Rest of the Field's chances of winning the tournament, and the Rest of the Field are currently 11/8 with Ladbrokes. Taylor will take some beating at Alexandra Palace but one man who has achieved that feat in this tournament in the past is Raymond Van Barneveld.
Dutchman Van Barneveld is at odds of 12/1 to win the tournament with Ladbrokes.com, and he actually beat Taylor in the final in 2007. He defeated 'The Power' 7-6 and you can bet with Ladbrokes on a repeat of that 2007 final and the exact same scoreline at massive odds of 150/1. Van Barneveld has drawn Steve 'The Muffin Man' Hine in the first round, and he will need to be on his guard as Hine upset another Dutchman Roland Scholten in the first round in last year's tournament.
Elsewhere, James Wade is second favourite for the tournament and his odds are 8/1 with Ladbrokes. The Englishman has drawn Spaniard Antonio Alcinas in round one. Last year's finalist Simon Whitlock is at odds of 12/1 and he will be hoping to go far again, although he faces a tricky first round tie against Steve Evans.
8/15 Phil Taylor
8/1 James Wade
12/1 Raymond Van Barneveld
12/1 Gary Anderson
12/1 Simon Whitlock
25/1 Adrian Lewis
40/1 Merv King
50/1 Terry Jenkins
50/1 Andy Hamilton
66/1 Mark Webster
66/1 Paul Nicholson
