2018 Premier League Darts Preview: van Gerwen to dominate event from the start
Michael van Gerwen kicked off his year with a fine win over Raymond van Barneveld in the Unibet Masters in Milton Keynes last night, and the world number one will embark on a journey to win his third Premier League Darts title on Thursday night, when the action kicks off in Dublin, and it's no surprise to see the Dutchman installed as a red-hot favourite for the coveted tournament.
- Michael van Gerwen has won last two Premier League darts titles
- MVG beat Raymond van Barneveld 11-9 in Unibet Masters final at weekend

MVG Heads The Betting
A memorable 11-10 victory over the now-retired Phil Taylor in last year's Premier League Darts final saw 'Mighty Mike' follow up his 2016 win over Peter Wright in the showpiece event in London, and MVG is a best-priced 4/5 with Paddy Power to make it a hat-trick of wins, and it's hard to see him not cruising into Finals day.
He will still be smarting from losing to man-of-the-moment Rob Cross in their World Championship semi-final thriller, and he will be desperate to try and dominate the PDC circuit this year, and ultimately try and top last year's tournament wins of 18, and with the Premier League needing consistency, then van Gerwen is the man to beat.
He can often string together a flurry of leg wins with ease, and in this best-of-12 concept he can blow some of his rivals away with the barrage of heavy scoring, and sublime finishing, and while there will be a fine field taking him on over the next few weeks, it's hard to see van Gerwen not landing this crown again.
Cross, Anderson, Wright The Main Trio To Challenge
Rob Cross has rocketed into the darting limelight over the last 12 months, and 'Voltage' was sensational throughout the World Championships, as he stormed past his rivals to land the Alexandra Palace crown, and he is 4/1 with Betfred to land the Premier League Darts title.
However, he showed when losing to Mensur Suljovic (50/1) in the Unibet Masters that he still lacks that consistency at the highest level, and he may find it tough here, and the better value is with 2011 and 2015 champion Gary Anderson (6/1 with Unibet), and 2016 beaten finalist Peter Wright (9/1 with Betfred).
Anderson has been troubled with a bad back over the last few months, and he will be hoping that doesn't hinder him over the lengthy tournament, while Wright will be hoping to bounce back from a defeat to Raymond van Barneveld (40/1) in the Unibet Masters, and he is someone that can shine in this tournament.
Best Of Rest And Battle For Bottom Spot
Realistically, it's only the front few in the market that will challenge for glory, and the likes of Michael Smith (80/1), Gerwyn Price (100/1) and Simon Whitlock (125/1) will find it tough against the world's elite, and that trio could be battling it out in the lower echelons of the table, and it's Smith that can pick up a bottom two spot come on Judgement Night after nine weeks, and at 11/8 with William Hill, he can suffer from relegation in an event that MVG can dominate.
