Gary Anderson Backed To Go All The Way At The World Grand Prix

The World Grand Prix Darts takes centre stage at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin from Sunday and it is no surprise to see that Michael van Gerwen is an odds-on favourite, although there could be a bit of value to be found elsewhere in this fast-paced event...

Mighty Mike

This week-long tournament has been held in Dublin since 2009 and it is unique in that players must start with a double during the course of their best-of-five leg matches. The straight knockout format is one that Michael van Gerwen knows well as he has reached four of the past five Grand Prix finals, winning three, and the defending champion beat Gary Anderson 5-2 to claim the title in 2016.

The Dutchman is a worthy favourite but his price of 5/6 is a touch short for our liking, particularly when you consider he is pencilled in to meet Raymond van Barneveld in the quarter-finals and then either Dave Chisnall or Adrian Lewis in the semi's.

Van Barneveld is a two-time runner-up at the Grand Prix and he reached the semi-finals twelve months ago, while a clash with van Gerwen will hold no fear as he actually beat his fellow Dutchman at the Champions League when they last met. At 40/1, Van Barneveld could attract some interest but we prefer to focus on Dave Chisnall in the top-half of the draw.

'Chizzy' finished runner-up here in 2013 before reaching the semi-finals in 2016 and he is exactly the kind of explosive player who should excel in this format. He enjoys the benefit of a relatively kind draw early on this year and he is well worth chancing at an each-way price of 50/1 with Paddy Power.
Tip #1: Dave Chisnall (each way) @ 50/1 with Paddy Power.

Gary To Go All The Way

In the bottom-half of the draw, Gary Anderson is a best price 5/1 after finishing runner-up in 2016 and the draw has been very kind to him this year. The Scot looks to have a straightforward route to the semi-finals, where he could potentially meet one of Mensur Suljovic, James Wade or Peter Wright, and we are going to have to side with Anderson.

It has been a season of near-misses for the two-time PDC World Champion as he was runner-up at the Masters, World Matchplay and Champions League, so with that in mind we might err on the side of caution by having an each-way play with him.
Tip #2: Gary Anderson (each way) @ 5/1 with Bet Victor.

Suljovic (25/1) is obviously a man in form following his Champions League success but he will be a marked man, while two-time Grand Prix winner, James Wade (50/1), has crashed out in the first round of Dublin during each of the previous two years.

Meanwhile, Wright (8/1) has been in fine form this year, winning ten titles, but he has never gone beyond the second round of the Grand Prix, exiting in the first round in four of his five appearances, and it is his fellow Scot, Anderson, who is tipped to sparkle in Ireland.
