A Tough Draw For The Defending Champion

The tournament has been held at a variety of venues since the inaugural edition in 2008 and Michael van Gerwen heads here as a two-time defending champion after following up his victory in Germany in 2014 with a second successive title in Hasselt last year.

Van Gerwen is a 5/4 favourite for a third crown in a row (Sky Bet) after he beat Gary Anderson 11-10 in a thrilling final last year but the pair have been drawn together in a very tough top-half of the draw this time around.

Van Gerwen opens his campaign with a first round clash against 2012 European Championship winner Simon Whitlock, who also finished runner-up in 2013, and they are in a section that also includes Jelle Klaasen, who has reached the quarter-finals of this event for each of the past three years, as well as Stephen Bunting, Michael Smith and home favourite Kim Huybrechts.

Anderson (7/1) opens up with a desperately tough match of his own against James Wade in the first round and the top-half is well left alone from a betting perspective.

Taylor's Time To Shine Again

In the bottom-half, things appear to have opened up very nicely for four-time European Championship winner Phil Taylor, who is 4/1 for the title and 5/4 to reach the final (SkyBet.com). 'The Power' hasn't won this tournament since he claimed the last of his four titles in 2011 but we fancy him to build on his quarter-final effort of last year.

Taylor was scoring brilliantly twelve months ago but he was struggling to finish matches off, which isn't such an issue this time around as he arrives off the back of his success at the Champions League, where he of course beat Van Gerwen in the final.

Taylor has since made an early exit from the World Grand Prix but he has often struggled at that event and the early loss may help to focus his mind as he prepares to take his place in a relatively comfortable third quarter of the draw in Belgium.

Chizzy Could Be An Each-Way Play

Taylor could well face either Peter Wright or Dave Chisnall in the semi-finals and Chisnall could be worth an each-way saver in case 'The Power' fails. 'Chizzy' fell to an inspired Van Gerwen in the last-eight in 2015 but he is in great touch this time around, having reached the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix and in Germany before reaching the final in Barnsley last week.

Chisnall is a tempting 16/1 shot (Betfred) and he could have the edge over Wright in the fourth quarter, with Chisnall leading their head-to-head meetings with ten wins to seven, including victory in the semi-finals of the European Match Play most recently.
