Michael van Gerwen tipped to land World Matchplay Darts Hat Trick at Winter Gardens

Michael van Gerwen will start his quest for a third consecutive World Matchplay Darts crown at the Winter Gardens on Saturday, and the reigning world champion showed when landing the Premier League crown earlier in the year that he is still the man they all have to beat, and will unsurprisingly be a red-hot favourite for the Blackpool trophy.

  • Michael van Gerwen is bidding for a hat-trick of World Matchplay wins
  • 15 times winner Phil Taylor has struggled for form of late

Favourites

Installed as a best-priced 8/11 favourite with Sky Bet Bookmakers for this crown, 'Mighty' Michael van Gerwen is a tough nut to crack in the matchplay format, which will be played over a certain number of legs, and not in sets, as if he can hit a purple patch then he has the ability to string five or six legs together in quick time, and will be out of sight.

He eased to victory over Phil Taylor 18-10 in last year's final, and has already racked up a number of titles this season already, and while he could potentially clash with Taylor, who is a huge 25/1 chance with Betfred, in the quarter-final, he should ease past 'The Power' who has found life tough in recent times, and it's van Gerwen who should storm to a hat-trick of Matchplay wins.

Gary Anderson has struggled at times this season, and will be hoping for a turn of fortunes in a televised event in 2017, but the Flying Scotsman is a little short at 5/1 with Betfair, while Peter Wright, who flopped in the Premier League final, when on the brink of victory, is the only other contender under double figures, but the 7/1 chance with Paddy Power will find it tough if he meets van Gerwen in the final.

Worth A Mention

Away from the top few in the betting there are the usual batch of recognisable names aiming for Matchplay glory and Dave Chisnall is 33/1 with Betfred, but he can come unstuck in these lengthy tournaments, while Adrian Lewis (40/1) is much like van Gerwen in that he can rack up a host of legs on the bounce, but may just struggle to land his first Matchplay crown.

James Wade (50/1 with bet365) won this title in 2007, but his inconsistencies see him struggle at the top level, while Raymond van Barneveld and Michael Smith, both 50/1 are another couple of premier players lining up, but lack that cutting edge at the very top level.

The Best Bet

Odds-on backers should enjoy steaming into van Gerwen, who is surely going to make it a hat-trick of wins, but for those looking for a more attractive bet have to look to the 2nd quarter betting, which sees the aforementioned pair of Chisnall and Lewis joined by Rob Cross and Kim Huybrechts.

That quartet should dominate, but if Lewis can find his best form then he can win the second quarter, and at 3/1 with bet365 is worth betting in what looks the most competitive betting angle amongst the four quarters of the draw.
