2017 Premier League Darts Play Offs Preview: van Gerwen to down Anderson at 02 arena

Over the last three-and-a-half months the best in the PDC have been battling out, but on Thursday night the 2017 Premier League Darts will come to a conclusion at the 02 arena in London, and it will be reigning champion Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright that will battle it out in the play-offs, with only one being crowned champion.

  • Michael van Gerwen won the Premier League title last season
  • Phil Taylor has won this event on six occasions
  • Peter Wright is in the play-offs for the first time

Messrs van Gerwen, Taylor and Anderson have all tasted victory in the event, but Wright will be sampling the Premier League play-offs for the very first time, and he will lock horns with the aforementioned Taylor in the second semi-final, which leaves Van Gerwen and Anderson locking horns in the first eliminator, in a repeat of the 2015 final, which saw the latter prevail 11-7.

Tips Michael van Gerwen to win 10-6    Best Bet @ 9 / 1

Unsurprisingly, Michael van Gerwen is a red-hot favourite for the first semi-final, which will be the best of 19 legs, and the Dutch thrower is as short as 1/3 with Betfair Sportsbook, but former world champion Gary Anderson has shown that on his day he can beat anyone, and having drawn 6-6 with van Gerwen in the Premier League earlier in the campaign then some punters may enjoy getting stuck into the 11/4 available with Sky Bet.

However, van Gerwen, who finished top of the Premier League table, beat Anderson 7-4 last week in this competition, so you have to feel that Mighty Mike will have too much firepower for the Flying Scotsman, and with the game extended this week then he is certainly one player that can maintain a high level for longer.

But, the 1/3 offers no value from a punting perspective, so you have to look elsewhere and Paddy Power's 9/1 about a 10-6 van Gerwen victory could be worth taking a flier, as while Anderson may stay with the Dutchman in the early exchanges it will be van Gerwen that pulls away in the latter stages and books his spot in the final.

Thursday 18th May, 8:15pm - Peter Wright vs Phil Taylor

Peter Wright v Phil Taylor
Tips Phil Taylor to win 10-8    Best Bet @ 10 / 1

The second semi-final is an absolute corker as six-times winner Phil Taylor aims to make his ninth career Premier League final, but in Peter Wright he has the most improved player on the circuit over the last few years, and it's Snakebite that will be the 8/15 favourite with Ladbrokes, while The Power is as big as 7/4 with BetVictor to bag the victory.

Wright finished four points clear of Taylor in the final standings, but they both have one win to their name from their meetings in the Premier League this season, so you have to feel that Wright is a little skinny in the win market, and while Taylor is not the force of old he can still produce the goods on the biggest stage.

So, with Taylor bound to relish the opportunity of reaching another marquee final in front of a bumper 02 arena crowd then the 7/4 for a shock Taylor win could be worth snapping up, and for those looking for a bigger price then snap up the 10/1 with BetVictor for a 10-8 Taylor win.

How Will The Final Go?

If van Gerwen and Taylor are to make it through to the final then the latter will be eager to bounce back from an 11-3 annihilation in last year's Premier League final, but van Gerwen has Taylor's measure these days and it's the Dutch thrower that can reign supreme in what should be a spectacular event.
