The tournament which starts this weekend and will be televised throughout by Sky Sports is one of the most popular of all tournaments due to the fact that the matches are scored on legs and not sets with the winners having to be two legs clear at the end.

Taylor, who has won here three times in the last four years starts his campaign off against relative unknown Barrie Bates, but it is interesting to note that he has never lost a final here, suggesting that if he vulnerable it will be in the rounds leading up to the semi final. However, he is 1/19 odds on to beat Bates, who is only rated as a 20/1 chance. Other players who usually play well at the Winter Gardens are world number 2, James Wade and World Number 5, Terry Jenkins. Wade in fact won here in 2007 and has made the finals in 2006 and 2008, where on each occasion he was beaten by Taylor. Jenkins has never won the World Matchplay, but like Wade he has reached three finals, including last year when he was slaughtered by Taylor by 18-4. Wade is a 7/2 chance to reach the final again this year while Jenkins looks very good value to do the same with odds of around 40/1.
