Phil 'The Power' Taylor never enters a darts event without the pre-tournament tag of 'favourite' and things are no different at the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts. Even with his new much publicised bespectacled look he remains the bookmakers' favourite as he got his tournament off to a winning start at the weekend. He is an industry best price of 1/2 favourite with Victor Chandler, and it is going to take something special to dethrone Taylor according to the bookmakers.
This weeks' Grand Slam of Darts at Wolverhampton Civic Centre is the first tournament that Taylor has worn his new spectacles for, but it showed no signs of hindering him as he defeated Michael van Gerwen 5-1 in his opening Group H match. The other players in his group are Ted Hankey and Wes Newton. Taylor has won this tournament every year since its inception in 2007, and you wouldn't back against him making the final on Sunday 21st November and making it four in a row. There is a £100,000 cash prize for the winner, and one man who has excellent pedigree in this tournament is Terry Jenkins.
Jenkins was runner-up to Taylor last year and made the semi-finals in 2008, but his odds with Victor Chandler of actually winning the tournament are currently 40/1. It is understandable that nobody comes close to match 'The Power' in the ante-post tournament betting when you consider that Taylor has over 150 professional tournament wins to his name and 15 World Championship titles. Earlier this year Taylor was the first darts player to ever to hit two 9-darters in one match, as he produced the goods against James Wade. The odds of a player producing a 9-dart finish during this tournament are currently 5/2 with VCBet and it might be worth a look with players of the calibre of Taylor around.
The second favourite with VictorChandler.com for the tournament is Taylor's fellow Englishman James Wade whose odds are 8/1 to produce an unlikely win. Wade knows what it takes to beat Taylor though, having defeated him in the 2010 Champions League Darts. 'The Machine' is the world number two and won the 2010 World Grand Prix but he got his Grand Slam of Darts tournament off to an inauspicious start as he has won one match but suffered a thumping 5-1 defeat at the hands of Tony O'Shea at the weekend.
One of Taylor's great rivals is the Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld who is a 12/1 shot with Victor Chandler to win this tournament. They have produced some epic contests in the past, but Taylor again holds all the aces against his opponent as he has won 35 of their 45 matches so far. 'Barney' did get his tournament off to a winning start at the weekend as he defeated Tricia Wright 5-0, but has not enjoyed the greatest of years during 2010. He moved from BDO to PDC in 2006 in an attempt to pit himself against the great Taylor, but 2010 has been massively disappointing as he has failed to win a tournament and he suffered an 18-12 defeat at the hands of Taylor in July at the World Matchplay Final.
It is going to take something special to beat Taylor this week at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, but if punters do fancy something special to happen then there are plenty of betting opportunities to be had with such long odds for some of the world's top players.
1/2 Phil Taylor
8/1 James Wade
10/1 Gary Anderson
12/1 Raymond van Barneveld
25/1 Mervyn King
33/1 Tony O'Shea
40/1 Dave Chisnall
40/1 Terry Jenkins
40/1 Wayne Jones
