Gary Anderson To Spoil Phil Taylor's Leaving Party At The PDC World Darts Championship
The 25th edition of the PDC World Darts Championship gets underway at Alexandra Palace on Thursday and it promises to be a fantastic few weeks of action as the retiring Phil Taylor bids to sign off his wonderful career on a high. Can 'The Power' do it?

Power To Fall Short
Taylor (14/1 to win the title with Betfred) has been crowned PDC world champion fourteen times during his glittering career and he is 14/1 to secure a fifteenth title in the final on 1st January. The retiring legend is sure to be emotional as he prepares to leave the sport and the draw hasn't been kind as he is in the same fourth quarter as Gary Anderson, who has only lost one of their five head-to-head meetings in 2017.
Anderson loves playing at 'Ally Pally' as he always tends to peak in time for this tournament and he has reached each of the last three finals, winning two titles in the process. The Flying Scotsman was runner-up to Michael van Gerwen last year and he is a tempting 7/1 (Betfred.com) to go all the way this year.
Peter Wright is also in the bottom-half of the draw but his price of 14/1 makes little appeal as we try to ascertain what shape he is in after he unfortunately suffered an illness scare with a suspected case of gallstones.
Van Gerwen Favourite
In the top-half, it is no surprise to see that Michael van Gerwen is the bookmakers 8/11 favourite after he won the PDC World Darts Championship for the first time since 2014 last year. The Dutchman is on a 28-match winning run currently and he is a worthy favourite, albeit his price is very short and he has been fallible during a 2017 campaign that has seen him suffer shock defeats at the World Match Play, Champions League of Darts and World Grand Prix.
Rob Cross (16/1) is also in the top-half following a superb debut season on the PDC tour but this is his first appearance at Alexandra Palace and we wonder whether the scale of the occasion might take its toll.
Instead, we prefer to side with an experienced campaigner who knows what it takes to perform at this stage and the 2007 PDC World Championship winner, Raymond van Barneveld, is a tempting 66/1 with Betfred bookmakers.
The Dutchman has reached at least the semi-finals in four of the past five years, including the last three in a row, and he is the one player who is capable of stunning Van Gerwen on his day.
