Mighty Mike Van Gerwen Is The Man To Beat At The World Darts Championship

The World Darts Championship gets underway on Sky Sports from Thursday and there is a 'top-heavy' feel to the draw for Alexandra Palace, with Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis all in the upper half of the draw...

Mighty Mike The Man To Beat

It is the dominant Van Gerwen who is undoubtedly the man to beat and it is no surprise to see that the world number one is 3/4 on with Betfair. For all his dominance, the Dutchman has only won at Alexandra Palace once, in 2014, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the final on 2nd January.

For most, Van Gerwen's draw would be daunting but he will be confident of getting through a quarter that includes Robert Thornton, Mensur Suljovic, Simon Whitlock and Stephen Bunting before he can then contemplate a meeting with the winner of the second quarter.

Taylor Fading

The second quarter includes sixteen-time winner Phil Taylor, who is bidding to win at Alexandra Palace for the first time since 2013. 'The Power' can be backed at 11/1 for a seventeenth crown (Boylesports) but it won't be easy as he could meet Van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis before he can even consider a potential semi-final with Van Gerwen.

Lewis has actually won five of his past eight meetings with Taylor and he has a fine record at Alexandra Palace having won here in 2011 and 2012. Last year's runner-up has endured a tough year by his own high standards but he has reached at least the quarter-finals in six of his past seven visits to Alexandra Palace and he is a dark horse at 40/1 (Paddy Power).

The Bottom Section

The two-time defending champion Gary Anderson is in a kind third quarter of the draw as he bids to win the world title for a third year running and the Scot is a 13/2 chance (Betfair). It bodes well that Anderson has reverted back to his old darts but he is still getting used to his new spectacles and that could leave him vulnerable, with Dave Chisnall (33/1) waiting to take advantage of any slip ups in that third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, James Wade (40/1) has the credentials as a three-time semi-finalist but it is Peter Wright who can come out on top in this section as 'Snakebite' has won five of the past six meetings with Wade.

Wright has enjoyed a good year without quite producing the goods in the big matches as he has reached the finals of the UK Open and German Masters during 2016 but he is another player with a close affinity to Alexandra Palace, where he has reached the quarter-finals in each of his past two visits after finishing runner-up in 2014.

Wright is 12/1 in the outright market, 6/5 to win the fourth quarter and 3/1 to reach the final.
