Week four of the Premier League darts season continues on Thursday at the Westpoint Arena in Exeter as the league table is starts to take shape. The unbeaten Gary Anderson leads the way but it is the crunch match between Raymond Van Barneveld and Phil Taylor that stands out this week, with Totesport making the reigning champion Taylor 2/5 odds on favourite to beat the Dutchman.
'The Power' Taylor appears to have rediscovered his form after a shaky six months that saw him go without a major tournament win and lose his World Championship crown in January. Darts fans could be forgiven for thinking that the legend was on the wane after he suffered his heaviest ever Premier League darts defeat to Adrian Lewis in the opening week but he has since hit back with two wins, including last week's 8-2 annihilation of Terry Jenkins.
Taylor averaged 98.46 during that match and he takes on the in-form Van Barneveld on Thursday. The Dutchman recorded his second successive win in the tournament with a thrilling 8-6 win over Lewis in Belfast, although he is an outsider at 8/1 to win the tournament. He is also the outsider for his match with Taylor at odds of 15/4 with Tote. It is not surprising as Taylor has won 35 of the 45 meetings between the two since Van Barneveld made the move from BDO darts to the PDC, and the Englishman has won the last 12.
They met in the 2010 World Matchplay tournament and Taylor won 18-12, with both players averaging well over 100, and they are the only players to throw nine darters in Premier League darts. It promises to be a thrilling match this week and Taylor might just have the edge but you back against a player of Barneveld's class at your peril.
Elsewhere on Thursday, table topper Garry Anderson looks to protect his unbeaten record, the only unbeaten player left this season, against last year's finalist James Wade. Anderson defeated Mark Webster 8-1 last week, averaging 99.24, and he is 4/7 odds on favourite for the match according to Tote. Anderson is industry best priced odds of 9/4 to win the tournament now, while Wade continues to struggle and is an outside 11/4 bet for the match. Wade came from 4-1 down to go 5-4 up against Simon Whitlock last week before losing out 8-5.
That was Whitlock's first win of the season and he is 4/6 favourite to follow up that victory with a win over Terry Jenkins. Bottom of the table Jenkins is a 9/4 punt for the match, but has only won fourteen legs to date. In the other match, it looks to be an evenly poised encounter between Mark Webster and World Champion Adrian Lewis. Totesport.com price Webster at 2/1, with Lewis 4/5 favourite despite following up his win over Phil Taylor with two consecutive defeats.
It is the match between Van Barneveld and 6/4 tournament favourite Taylor that will provide most interest for the punter, and it could well be a pivotal match in the season for two legends of the game.
