Phil Taylor will start overwhelming favourite ahead of the UK Open Darts Competition to be held at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton this week. World number one Taylor and recent winner of the Premier League Darts tournament has won this tournament, three times in the past, including last year and will start proceedings as 1/2 odds on favourite to win again with Ladbrokes.com
UK Open Darts LIVE on Sky Sports 1 from Thursday until Sunday
The tournament which is commonly known as the ‘FA Cup of darts’, pits together the top players in the world against the less well known and always has its fair share of shocks and surprises. There are 128 competitors at the outset with no seedings structure. Each match is drawn randomly, meaning that anyone can play anyone in any round. Punters are therefore warned not to get too carried away with the obvious when it comes to individual match betting as there has been plenty of unknowns who have reached the latter stages.

Sadly two time winner, Raymond Van Barnaveld will be missing from the line up, but players of the calibre of James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Mervyn King will be on hand to take on Taylor. Indeed, Wade, runner up to Taylor in the Premier League final last week, is second favourite to win the event, a feat he succeeded in doing in 2008, when he beat American, Gary Mawson in the final. Wade is a 10/1 shot with Ladbrokes to repeat the feat.
Apart from Taylor (3), Wade and Van Barnaveld (2), no other player apart from Roland Scholten has won this event since its inception in 2003, however there has been a different runner up each year. One of those was Canadian John Part who has twice been a world champion and may just have the incentive to ‘rock the boat’ this week after being out of the darting limelight for some time. Part is a 66/1 chance, which we think represents outstanding each way value.

As always it is difficult to see beyond Taylor from winning this, he is the obvious choice, but as always we will oppose him as he simply does not have the value that we would look for. On top of that, he has been beaten in this event several times, which leads us to think that a better value win bet will be with Simon Whitlock from Australia, who was runner up to Taylor in the World Final. Provided he can avoid Taylor in the early stages then we will back him to win with odds of 10/1 from Ladbrokes
1/2 Taylor
10/1 Wade
10/1 Whitlock
20/1 Anderson
25/1 King
33/1 Lewis
40/1 Walsh
40/1 Hamilton
40/1 Lloyd
50/1 BAR
