Don't Underestimate The Power Of Taylor At The 2017 Premier League Darts

The Premier League of Darts gets underway in Newcastle on Thursday and it is no surprise to see that Michael van Gerwen is the bookmakers' favourite as he gears up for his title defence (Check Out Our Night One Preview Here)...

  • In the past four years of Premier League Darts, Michael van Gerwen has won the title twice and finished runner-up twice
  • Phil Taylor has reached the semi-finals in 11 of his 12 appearances at the Premier League, winning six titles and finishing runner-up twice

Phil Taylor to win (each way) @ 14 / 1
Raymond van Barneveld to win (each way) @ 33 / 1

The Market Leaders

There will be nine weeks of action involving ten of the world's best players before the bottom-two in the table are relegated and the remaining eight men will compete over the course of six more nights for a place in the semi-finals at the O2 Arena in London on 18th May...

It is a format that Van Gerwen knows all too well as he has reached at least the final during each of the past four campaigns, winning twice and finishing runner-up twice, and the newly crowned world champion is 8/13 to win outright this year (Betway).

Van Gerwen probably should and will win the Premier League but his price is very skinny for a competition that lasts almost four months and it may be worth waiting for the event to get underway to see if his price inflates, which it may do as he isn't unbeatable in this format, with the Dutchman losing ten matches in the past four years at this tournament.

Gary Anderson is then next best in the betting at 5/1 as he bids to win the Premier League for a third time following his successes in 2011 and 2015. The Scot has reached at least the semi-finals for each of the past three years, albeit he lost to Phil Taylor in the last-four in 2016, and he looks nailed on for a place in London in May.

Anderson's fellow Scot, Peter Wright, is third-favourite at 11/1 but we are reticent to back a player who hasn't made the semi-finals in three previous Premier League appearances and we prefer to side with experience...

Taylor Over-Priced

They don't come much more experienced than Phil Taylor, who has reached eight Premier League finals in twelve years, winning six and twice finishing runner-up. 'The Power' was beaten by an inspired Van Gerwen in the 2016 finale and he consistently produces the goods in this format.

Quite frankly, we are amazed that he is as big as 14/1 (Betfred) to win this tournament for the first time since 2012 and we fancy he will reach the semi-finals at the very least (5/4 with Betway).

Taylor has made the last-four in eleven of his twelve appearances in this competition and he knows what it takes to get the job done. Yes, he may be getting on in years but the motivation of knowing this will be his final Premier League appearance before retiring at the end of the 2018 World Championships will be huge and the 59-year-old isn't finished yet as he has won his last three meetings with Van Gerwen, while he warmed up for Newcastle by beating both Anderson and Wright at last week's Masters event.

The Rest

Meanwhile, Adrian Lewis, a Premier League runner-up in 2011, can be backed at 25/1 and the 2009 champion James Wade is a 40/1 shot, albeit he has finished 7th and 6th in the final standings during the past two years,

Dave Chisnall (33/1) is playing well and reached the semi-finals in 2015, while 2014 winner Raymond van Barneveld (33/1 with Bet Victor) has reached the semi-finals in eight of his eleven appearances and is 9/4 to do so again this season.

Finally, Jelle Klaasen makes his first Premier League appearance since 2009 and Kim Huybrechts returns after finishing bottom of the pile in 2015.
