The Tour De France is a world famous bike rice that takes place at a different course in July each year, although since 1975 it has always finished at the Champs-Elysees in Paris.
It lasts for three weeks and involves more than 2,100 miles so there are always plenty of opportunities for betting along the way - whether ante-post betting or in-running betting. The race itself is broken up into stages and you can bet on the winner of each stage, with the winner of a stage given the 'yellow jersey'.
Each rider's individual times for the stages aggregated and the winner is the person with the fastest time overall. In terms of comparing it to other sports, cycling probably bears comparison with motor racing and the Formula One season.
In recent years Lance Armstrong had been the dominant force in the sport, winning for seven consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2005 and he dominated cycling much like Roger Federer had dominated tennis and Tiger Woods with the world of golf.
But since his retirement the Spaniard Alberto Contador has become the stand out name and he is likely to be well backed in the betting, if not odds on favourite, if he is in attendance this year. Indeed, Spanish cyclists are well worth looking out for in the odds as they have enjoyed great success in recent years.

Frenchman Thomas Voeckler, holder of the yellow jersey heading into the final week, failed to make the podium as he finished fourth, with Alberto Contador, hot favourite in the ante-post betting, back in fifth.
