Tour De France Odds: In Form Aru A Massive Each Way Player For Astana

1st - 23rd July 2017 - Tour De France

The 2017 edition of the Tour De France gets underway in Germany on Saturday, and many are expecting it to be one of the most open renewals in recent memory. A host of big name riders are going into the race with genuine chances of claiming the famous yellow jersey, whilst the race for the podium will be equally as hotly contested.

  • Chris Froome has won the Tour three times in the last four years
  • There has been no French winner of the Tour since 1985

Quality Trio At The Head Of The Outright Winner Market

The race for the yellow jersey is of course the main focus, and we have an intriguing betting market from an ante-post point of view.

Richie Porte is the favourite with the majority of firms with the Australian looking for his first grand tour victory thanks to a thrilling run of form. Porte has already won the Tour Down Under and the the Tour de Romandie this year, and his 2nd place finish at the Dauphine should put him spot on for a tilt at the big one.

The worry for Porte fans is his record in the Grand Tours with only one top five finish to his name in the Tour De France. His propensity to attract bad luck is a major concern but despite that he is 9/4 with Sky Bet to stand on the top step in Paris.

Porte will be coming up against an old team-mate in Chris Froome (13/8) who is aiming for his 4th Tour De France victory this year. The doubters will point to his average form this season with his 4th place in the Dauphine below expectations, but he has been there and done it, and it would be a shock if he was out of the frame over the next few weeks.

Nairo Quintana (7/1) is perhaps the best pure climber in the peleton but the time trials remain his kryptonite, as he showed at the Giro, and backing up so quickly after coming up short in Italy is a big ask.

Aru And Valverde The Each Way Plays

Punters looking for a bigger priced play in the overall market have one or two options at their disposal, including Alejandro Valverde (22/1).

The Spaniard will be riding in support of Quintana in general but the course will suit the all-rounder and with only two severe mountain top finishes, he might just be able to hang with the big boys for longer than normal, especially if Quintana is not at his best.

We should also mention Fabio Aru here with the Italian a massive each-way price at 33/1 with Ladbrokes. A former winner of the Vuelta, he is la better pure climber than team-mate Fuglsang, and he was reported to be in devastating form at the weekend when picking up the Italian National Championships.

Chris Froome is the most likely winner of the overall having been there and done it, unlike Porte, but our money is certainly going to be with Aru. The Astana man has also been on the podium twice at the Giro and 33s to do the same at the Tour is a ridiculously big price.
