Imperious Froome long odds on for Tour de France glory ahead of Stage 17

Chris Froome has looked absolutely imperious during the 2016 Tour de France as he again exhibited his all-round ability by finishing thirteenth in Monday's sprint stage. The two-time champion admitted that he was looking forward to Tuesday's rest day as he moved into odds on favouritism going into the final week...

Dominant

Froome is 2/17 (Unibet) for a third win in France as he retained the yellow jersery with another impressive ride during Stage 16 and he now holds a 1 minute 47 second lead at the head of the General Classification.

The lead is actually smaller than those he has held prior to the Alps sections during his 2013 (4 min 14 sec) and 2015 (3 min 10 sec) successes. His Sky Team are looking so strong now though and it is no surprise to see that he is 11/4 favourite to win Wednesday's Stage 17 - the first of three mountain stages left, either side of Thursday's uphill time-trial and prior to Sunday's final procession into Paris.

Froome will be expecting to head into the French capital with the yellow jersey for a third time and Bet 365 have reacted to his anticipated glory by clipping him in from 33/1 to 14/1 in the Sports Personality of the Year betting.

The Rest

It is up to the other hopefuls to attack now and Bauke Mollema has enjoyed a potentially career-defining month so far as he is second in the GC. The Dutchman has attempted a few mind games by pointing out that Froome "cracked in the 2012 Vuelta a Espana" when leading but Mollema has his own history to deal with as the last time he was second overall going to the Alps in 2011, he eventually finished sixth.

Mollema is a 25/1 shot for Tour de France glory, while Nairo Quintana can be backed at 16/1 (Bet Victor). The Movistar rider is 2 min 59 sec behind Froome and he is danger of finishing runner-up to the British star at a Tour de France for a third time.

Green With Envy

Elsewhere, Peter Sagan is 1/500 on for a fifth successive green jersey as he took an unassailable lead over Mark Cavendish in the points classification. Only a withdrawal can deny Sagan, who has now won three stages following his exhilarating sprint success on Monday,

Rafal Majka is 1/3 to finish as King of the Mountains, although Froome is lurking dangerously at 10/1 with Paddy Power.

Orica's Adam Yates, who starts Wednesday 2min 45 sec behind the GC leader, is 1/3 to win the Young Rider Classification, although Louis Meintjes is afforded respect as a 3/1 shot.
