Chris Froome Hot Favourite To Make History With Vuelta A Espana Success

The eyes of the cycling world will fall on Spain for the next three weeks as the third and final Grand Tour of the season takes centre stage. The Vuelta A Espana is always a great spectacle, and that is even more the case in 2017, with one of the strongest line-ups in recent memory assembling.

  • Chris Froome has finished 2nd in the Vuelta three times during his career
  • Alberto Contador has won the Vuelta three times during his career, and this will be his last race as a pro

Froome The Clear Favourite For Famous Win

Chris Froome, hot off of another Tour De France win, arrives in Spain on the brink of history, and as a warm favourite in the overall classification. The Brit is bidding to become the first rider since Bernard Hinault in 1978 to win the tour and Vuelta in the same season, and just the third cyclist ever.

History is certainly against Froome but his supporters will point to the fact that this has been the plan all season with his form gradually increasing through the year. He managed to win the tour without appearing to be at his best, and if he has improved again, he will be very hard to stop over the next three weeks.

Froome will be hoping to be within touching distance ahead of the 40km time trial on stage 16, and if he is, the even money with Sky Bet about him winning, will seem a fair price.

Other Contenders?

Alberto Contador (9/1) announce recently that the Vuelta will be his final race as a pro and that is sure to see him attract plenty of attention. The three time winner of the race put in a decent display at the Tour last time out, but the truth is he hasn't been on a Grand Tour podium since winning the Giro in 2015, and stage wins might be the best bet for the home hero.

Vincenzo Nibali, another former Vuelta winner, is much more fancied as he comes into the race fresh after swerving the Tour De France, which means he is sure to put in a strong display. He performed well to finish 3rd in the Giro earlier in the year, and although his team is weaker than he would have wanted due to injuries, the Shark Of Messina is sure to be in the frame at 9/2 with Bet Victor.

Of the other contenders, Fabio Aru (18/1) is another former winner to be respected but he gave everything in the Tour De France before falling short, and it is hard to see him back that up, whilst Ilnur Zakarin (16/1) is likely to be a Grand Tour winner in the future but this one might come too soon given the quality of the field.

Majka Could Be The Magic Bet

Chris Froome will win the Vuelta if he near his best but he isn't a working mans price, which means we have a bigger priced punt. Rafal Majka abandoned the Tour De France after a crash but has reported to have bounced back well from that, he is set for a big three weeks in Spain.

He was good enough to finish 3rd in the Vuelta back in 2015, and as a two time Polka Dot Jersey winner in the Tour De France, he is a pure climber. Add to that, the fact that the Pole has a strong team around him, and 40/1 with Bet365 is a juicy each-way bet.
