Tour de France Stage 6 Preview: Back Mark Cavendish to grab 29th stage win

The 2016 Tour de France has already thrown up an eventful opening five days, with Mark Cavendish equalling Bernard Hinault's record tally of 28 stage victories after bagging a brace of wins, Peter Sagan and Marcel Kittel grabbing a triumph apiece, while Greg Van Avermaet stormed his way into history in Stage 5 after becoming the latest rider to sport the Yellow Jersey. The Tour now ventures into the 6th stage on Thursday in what is expected to be a belter from Arpajon-sur-Cere to Montauban.

Info:

  • Stage 6 ventures from Arpajon-sur-Cere to Montauban (190.5km).
  • Stage 6 is expected to end in bunch sprint, but hilly terrain could result in a successful breakaway.
  • Greg Van Avermaet is in the Yellow Jersey, with Peter Sagan in Green.
  • One more stage win for Mark Cavendish (28) will put him 2nd in overall stage wins, behind Eddy Merckx (34).

Where we stand after Stage 5...

Van Avermaet's heroic ride - he led from start to finish - means the Belgian now leads the Tour by a whopping margin of 5min 11secs. But, it's ante-post favourite and defending champion Chris Froome who remains top of the pile in the General Classication betting (6/5), closely followed by rival Nairo Quintana (6/4), with the duo on the same time as fellow contenders Fabio Aru, Romain Bardet, Tejay van Garderen and Pierre Rolland (all 5mins 17secs off the leader).

Meanwhile, a battered and bruised Alberto Contador once again lost time, dropping 6mins 38secs off the lead, whereas Vincenzo Nibali had an absolute stinker, meaning the Italian now lies 15mins off the pace.

In the race to win the Points Classiciation it's Peter Sagan who holds onto the Green Jersey after five stages as he bids to win it for the fifth year in a row. Mark Cavendish is four points behind, followed by Kittel who is a further four points adrift. The trio can currently be found at 1/4, 18/1, and 7/1 respectively in the PC betting.

Stage 6 - Arpajon-sur-Cere to Montauban, 190 km

Riders have little time to recover from Wednesday's first mountain stage, as Stage 6 promises to be another energy sapping day as they grind their way through 190 long-busting kilometres, from Arpajon-sur-Cere to Montauban.

The finish is expected to end in a bunch sprint, however there is every possibility that a breakaway could hold on, due to the frequent hilly terrain of the stage. Therefore, a number of cyclists will be bidding to put their name in lights and even grab the yellow jersey for a day or two, with the likes of Thomas Voeckler (150/1), Dylan Groenwegen (100/1), and Edward Theuns (66/1) all worth keeping an eye on.

However, considering that the last 40km are enitirely flat, straight roads, this gives the sprinters and their crews the ideal opportunity to pull any breakaways back. And, with that in mind, we're backing the in-form Mark Cavendish to grab his 29th stage victory, which would subsequently put the Brit outright in the all time list, behind Eddy Merckx. In-form Cavendish has won two of the five stages so far, and represents an appealling bet at 9/2 (Bet365) to make it three in six.

Alternatively, Marcel Kittel, Andre Greipel, and Peter Sagan can be backed at 15/8, 5/1, and 10/1 respectively to finish top of the pile on day six.
