Giro D'Italia Odds: Young Brit Adam Yates Set For Big Grand Tour Performance

2017 Giro D'Italia - 5th-28th May

The 100th edition of the famed Giro D'Italia gets underway this weekend, and the first Grand Tour of the season is always a must watch for fans of cycling. The Giro might not quite have the prestige of the Tour De France, but many purists prefer the Italian event, and to celebrate a landmark edition of the race, the organisers have put together a cracking route.

  • Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali have won three of the last four Giros between them

Tough Route for the Riders...

The organisers have gone all out this year with some spectacular finishes in prospect over the next three weeks. The 100th edition of the race is sure to attract plenty of extra attention, and with climbs like Mount Etna, Mortirolo and two passes of the legendary Stelvio Pass on the agenda, it is certainly going to be one for the climbers.

As well as some brutal climbs, there are also a couple of key time trials on the agenda which will shape the outcome of the race. Any rider who dreams of claiming the Maglia Rosa, will need to perform well in the two individual timed stages with 69km of the entire route coming in time trials.

Quintana and Nibali The Headline Acts

The names of Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali loom large at the top of the betting, and hopefully both turn up in top form ahead of one could be a major battle. Quintana won the Giro back in 2014 and on class and reputation, he is streets ahead of the field.

The purest of pure climbers, Quintana has improved his time trialling in recent years as well which should put him in pole position for the win. There are one or two fears that he comes in here under-cooked, and he does also have the Tour De France on his agenda this summer, but even taking that into account, he is hard to look last at 11/10 with Betfred.

Vincenzo Nibali (6/1) has two Giro wins on his CV, including last year, and he is always a man to be reckoned with on his home soil. His form has been patchy in 2017 which is a worry but he will be a eager to perform, especially when the race heads up Mount Etna on stage 4 in front of his home crowd in Sicily.

It is hard to see Nibali beating an in-form Quintana but he is one of an elite band to have won all three Grand Tours, so has to be respected by punters.

Plenty Of Each Way Plays...

Quintana is hard to ignore at the top of the market but there are a number of each-way plays for punters to consider as alternatives.

Team Sky go into this one with two team leaders in the form of Geraint Thomas (14/1 with bet365) and Mikel Landa (15/1) and it will be fascinating to see which of those two takes charge. Both are capable of climbing well enough to be in the top five with Landa good enough to finish 3rd in the 2015 Giro, and Thomas coming off of an impressive win in the Tour of the Alps.

Steven Krujijswijk (10/1) went close to winning the Giro last year only to take a tumble with the overall win within reach., and will be eager to bounce back, whilst Thibaut Pinot (15/1) has always had the talent to figure in Grand Tours but he often falls short, and is hard to fancy as a result.

Yates The Man To Follow

The rider we are lumping our money on though is the highly exciting Adam Yates, who looks very enticing at a price of 18/1 with bet365. The Orica man was 4th in the Tour De France last year, and picked up the young riders white jersey as a result, and the Giro is his main aim this year.

He showed decent form recently when 4th in the Tour Of Catalunya which is encouraging and given his ability as a climber, 18/1 is far too big for each-way punters to ignore.
