West Indies play India in the second of their three test match series on Tuesday, with the Indians very much in the driving seat after winning the opening match. They are 10/11 favourites with William Hill to make it 2-0 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados this week, while the Windies are priced 11/2, but the draw could prove tempting at 11/8 as rain showers have been predicted for much of the week.
The Windies failed to apply themselves properly when batting during the first test in Jamaica and eventually succumbed to a 63 run defeat. The selectors have reacted to that loss by dropping Brendan Nash and opting not to recall Chris Gayle, and they will hope the remaining batsmen are capable of batting out more than 70 overs - something they failed to do in each innings last week.
The experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be the key man for them and he has a fine recent record at the Kensington Oval. In the last three tests there has racked up scores of 71, 70, 79 and 50, and he starts as a 7/2 favourite to be top West Indies batsman in the first innings this time.
In stark contrast to the West Indies batting problems last week, Rahul Dravid gave a masterclass in discipline and patience as he scored 40 and 112 in Jamaica. Furthermore, 'the wall' averages 70 in the West Indies and he looks good value to be top India batsman in the first innings at odds of 10/3 with Hills.
The concern for India though will be the form of their opening batsmen, Murali Vijay and Abhinav Mukund, who failed to past 15 as a partnership in the last match. The first India wicket falling with less than 33.5 runs on the board looks a decent punt at 5/6 with WilliamHill.com, although the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautum Gambir and Sachin Tendulkar will return for the test series with England after being rested for this tour.
The pitch at the Kensington Oval should offer plenty of pace and bounce for the fast bowlers this week and we like the look of the pacey Fidel Edwards to be top West Indies bowler in the first innings. Edwards can be backed at odds of 3/1, while the tall Ishant Sharma can be backed in the equivalent market for India at 3/1 after impressing in Jamaica.
It is a must win match for the West Indies this week if they are to win the series and how the batting lineup copes will be key to their hopes. They have only won one of their last eight tests at the Kensington Oval though and with rain expected at some point, that could prove difficult. The draw could be worth backing at 11/8 at this stage, although India start as firm favourites.
