Sri Lanka host Pakistan in Colombo in this Group A World Cup Cricket match which promises to be an absolute epic. Both teams come into the match following 200 plus run victories in their opening games Sri Lanka defeating Canada by 210 runs and Pakistan whacking Kenya by a very similar score. However both teams will know that the competition starts in earnest with this match which neither team would want to lose. The Bookmakers surprisingly see it as a relatively comfortable win for the hosts with Bet365 offering them at 1/2 odds on and Pakistan at 13/8.
Many believe that the outcome of matches played in Colombo is decided by which captain wins the toss, with fourteen teams winning as opposed to just four against over the last five years. It should also be noted that the team batting first in the last ten One Day Internationals at Colombo have put together an average of 287, with six of those team passing 300 runs with all of them winning. Clearly therefore the outright win bet is a ‘no-brainer’, and punters should lump whoever bats first, particularly if they have won the toss.
The two teams of course know each other very well having played lots of times against each other over the last few years. Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi rightly points out that the big problem his team faces is the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga, who are both world class match winners on their day. However, the Pakistan batsmen has dealt with them successfully in the past and are confident that they can do so again particularly as Malinga is only just returning after an injury lay-off and ‘Murali’ is not at his absolute best.
Most of the Pakistan batsmen has shown good form recently, particularly Younus Khan who would be our pick to be Pakistan top batsman on the day with odds of 4/1 available from bet365. Similar odds can be snapped up on most of the front line Pakistan ‘batters’, although big hitting Abdul Razzaq, who usually comes in well down the order is always worth a flutter at 25/1 in this market, particularly if Pakistan struggle for runs. He has done it before and is well capable of doing it again.
As far as Sri Lanka are concerned Malinga heads the market to be their top bowler at 13/5 with ‘Murali’ next best at 3/1 and Mendis at 10/3. In the batting captain, Kumar Sangakkara is the favourite to be the Sri Lankan top batsman with odds of 3/1 and is closely followed by the extremely entertaining Tillakaratne Dilshan at 7/2.
