Pakistan take on England in the second test beginning on Wednesday at the Sheik Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The hosts may be having to play their home matches in a foreign country but they adapted well to surrounding to win a very one-sided affair in Dubai last week. It's a question of whether lightning can strike twice for England as they look to improve on their batting which was virtually non-existant in the first test. This looks like being the hardest test yet to the new world number one team and they're underdogs here with bookmaker Bet365 who make Pakistan 9/4 to win the match opposed to England's odds of 11/5. The draw can be backed at 27/20.
Pakistan thrashed England in the opening test match in Dubai a week ago, winning by ten wickets after bowling the tourists out twice. It was a very poor display with the bat from Andrew Strauss's team made worst by the fact that they won the toss and decided to bat first and seemingly didn't learn from their first innings mistake to once again fail in their second innings. Such was the dominance of Pakistan in the field, that they skittled England out for 192 in the first innings and 160 in the second. It was a flat pitch and the England bowlers did a decent job restricting Pakistan to just 338 in their first innings, but such was the collapse of England's second innings Pakistan knocked off the 15 runs required with ease to win the match by ten wickets.
We can expect another good pitch in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and you can expect whoever wins the toss to bat first. Opener Mohammad Hafeez top scored with the bat for Pakistan in the first test and it's no surprise that Bet 365 make him their favourite to be the top Pakistan batsman at odds of 7/2, jointly with Younis Khan. Taufeeq Uman also impressed with the bat scoring a half century and he is a 9/2 shot to be top batsman, whilst Adnan Akmal recorded his highest total to date with 61 and can be backed at 20/1.
Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss will go into Tuesday's test match against Pakistan opening the batting for England for the 100th time. It hasn't been an unbroken partnership but this week it will become only the fourth in world test cricket to achieve this feat and it has been England's most prolific in terms of innings and matches. Neither player troubled the scorers in the first test, Cook out for single figures in both innings in Dubai whilst Strauss was rather unlucky to be given out by DRS in his second innings.
Cook enjoyed a fabulous 2011 and of the openers he is the best fancied to go on and record the team's biggest score in the match, with Bet365 making him 7/2 opposed to Strauss's 9/2. It's Jonathan Trott however who heads the betting at 10/3 and he seems to have the temprement to adapt to conditions best as his top score second innings of 49 intimated.
You have to think that the England batsman will have worked hard on playing spin in the week between the two matches. Saeed Ajmal took ten wickets in the match last week and seven in the first innings and this success could mean that England decide to play two spinners this week, with Monty Panesar rumoured to be coming in for Chris Tremlett.
