After winning the Test series, England's attention will turn to the shorter format of the game over the next few weeks with a Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka first on the menu. The match at the County Ground in Bristol on Saturday looks evenly poised, with England slight favourites at 8/11 in the betting with William Hill, but we fancy Sri Lanka could be worth backing at 11/10.
For both sides it is an opportunity to build towards the World Twenty20 Cup, which will be held in Sri Lanka in September 2012.
World champions England have taken the opportunity to add some youthful exuberance to their squad and new captain Stuart Broad will lead the troops. Samit Patel has earned a recall after his much publicised fitness problems and love of food. Patel has been in fine form for Nottinghamshire this season, averaging 24 in the T20 competition and he has an edge over his test colleagues as he is well versed in the T20 format this season. Patel can be backed at a very tempting 8/1 to be top England batsman this weekend.
A safer punt could come in the form of Kevin Pietersen though, as KP looked back to his very best with an 85 in the last test at the Rose Bowl and with a healthy average of 31.91 in international T20's, he heads the betting at 9/2 to be top batsman.
The bowling attack also welcomes a new face as Steve Finn comes in. The selection has raised a few eyebrows but he has taken five for 61 from 10 overs at 12.2 for Middlesex in the T20 format this year, and he looks good value at 4/1 to be top England bowler with WilliamHill.com.
England beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the T20 World Cup semi-final last year on their way to winning the competition and en route to a record breaking eight consecutive T20 wins. Sri Lanka though are a dangerous proposition and warmed up with a 57 run win over Worcestershire in a one day match on Tuesday.
The selection of Sanath Jayasuriya is controversial as he will play just the T20 match and the first One Day International. Jayasuriya showed he still had plenty to offer with 78 off 60 balls against Worcester and he is 9/2 to be top Sri Lanka batsman with Hills.
Their bowling attack is headed by the dangerous Lasith Malinga, who has retired from test cricket but was the IPL Purple Cap winner. The cap goes to the leading wicket taker in the tournament, and Malinga took 27 wickets for Mumbai Indians this year, and at 9/4 he leads the way to be top Sri Lanka bowler on Saturday.
It is a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to pick up a win after the arduous test series and we fancy they could come away with a win. With Jayasuriya, Sangakkara and Mendis in their ranks it could be worth backing Sri Lanka to score more sixes than England at 6/5 in the betting
