England open their 2011 Cricket World Cup campaign with a match against the Netherlands on Tuesday morning and will have to be on their guard to avoid another upset against the Dutch. Holland famously beat England in the 2009 World Twenty20 and are huge outsiders in Nagpur, India, this week as they are 11/1 to win with Bet 365. England are long odds on at 1/33 and it is vital they get off to a winning start in Group B.
The upset at Lords in 2009 was one of the major upsets of recent times and highlighted the struggles England have in major tournaments, with confusion reigning over player selection and tactics. Worryingly it is a similar story this time following the 6-1 loss in the one day international series in Australia recently, although injury has contributed to many of the difficulties.
With no obvious opening partnership Kevin Pietersen has been promoted to the top of the order and we fancy it could be a move that pays dividends as the big hitting batsman thrives on responsibility. He is 11/4 favourite to be top England batsman on Tuesday with B365 and we fancy that is well worth a look.
Stuart Broad has returned from injury for the World T20 Champions and made an immediate difference to the team with two wins from two warm up matches. Admittedly the first win was only by 16 runs against Canada, with the second far more convincing by 67 runs against Pakistan. Broad was influential in both wins with five for 37 and five for 25, and he looks well set to be top England bowler against Holland at industry best priced odds of 11/4. Graeme Swann is also expected to return from injury and he could form a twin spin partnership with Michael Yardy and that move could suit the spinning wicket of Nagpur.
The Netherlands meanwhile are not to be underestimated as they proved in 2009 and last July they beat Bangladesh in a one dayer, and they boast some quality batsmen. Essex all rounder Ryan ten Doeschate has made a name for himself as a big hitting batsman in county cricket and if he gets going he looks well placed at odds of 2/1 to be the Netherlands' top batsman. Alex Kervezee of Worcestershire also performed well in division two last season and looks a stylish batsman with some potential, and he can be backed as top batsman at industry best priced odds of 9/2 with Bet365.com.
England should secure victory comfortably and anything other than a comprehensive win would spell disaster for their tournament hopes with a match against India coming up on Sunday. Netherlands meanwhile will have nothing to lose and will draw a lot from their 2009 win and the recent indifferent form of England.
