The mouth-watering four test series between England and India gets underway at Lord’s on Thursday and there is barely anything to choose between the sides in the series betting with Paddy Power. England are marginal favourites at 5/4, with India priced 15/8, and the drawn series can be backed at 23/10.
There is plenty at stake as England can become the world’s number one side if they beat India by two or more tests and Paddy Power go 5/2 that Andrew Strauss’s men are number one come the end of August. The series will also be dominated by an interesting side story as Sachin Tendulkar bids to score his hundredth hundred in international cricket. The concern for India will be their lack of preparation leading into the first test match, the 2000th match in test match history, as they have only had one tour match against Somerset on English soil so far. Tendulkar failed in that game but he is still 10/3 to finish the series as India’s top runscorer and 8/1 to be man of the series.
The Indian batting is weakened by the loss of Virender Sehwag to injury for the first two test matches, although Rahul Dravid averages 57.26 in England and he looks very tempting to be top India batsman at 7/2.
For England, Andrew Strauss gained some much needed batting practise against India for Somerset at the weekend as the England captain got amongst the runs. His battle with the left arm seamer Zaheer Khan will be crucial and Strauss is currently 4/1 to be top England batsman, while Alastair Cook is priced 3/1 as he looks to improve his average of 40.53 against the Indians.
England will of course come up against their old coach Duncan Fletcher, as he is now at the helm for India, and he will no doubt have some special plans for Kevin Pietersen. This is the sort of high pressure series that Pietersen should thrive in and he can be backed to score more than 227.5 runs in the series at 5/6 with PaddyPower.com, and he is a very tempting 20/1 to overshadow Tendulkar and be man of the series.
When the betting market for top England bowler is released, it could be worth a look at Chris Tremlett as he took 13 wickets at 29.69 when India last played in England, while Zaheer Khan looks the most obvious choice for India as he is a master of exploiting swinging conditions.
It all looks set to be an enthralling series and England will need to take advantage of India’s lack of preparation leading into the game, with the correct score of 2-1 to England looking good value at 9/2.
