England are well on top after the first day of the Ashes Third Test thanks to a day to remember for new opening bowler Chris Tremlett, and Totesport have cut England in accordingly to odds on 8/15 favourites for the match. Their odds for winning the Ashes Series have gone as short as 1/3 after an excellent day's cricket on Thursday. Surrey man Tremlett was the pick of the England attack as they skittled the Australians for 268 after captain Andrew Strauss opted to field, and Strauss, with fellow opener Alastair Cook, safely negotiated 12 overs to ensure it was England's day yet again.
Australia, despite a glut of changes, struggled once more as they slipped to 69 for 5 with new opener Phil Hughes falling for two. Six foot eight inch Tremlett was the chief destroyer with first innings figures of 3 for 61 from 20 overs, and it was an excellent return to test cricket for him after three years in the wilderness. He opened the bowling with James Anderson, who was below par early on, and ensured the loss of Stuart Broad wasn't as keenly felt as it might have been. Australia did recover thanks to some lower order runs from Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson but they have drifted out to 9/2 with Totesport.com for the match, which is an industry best price. The draw is at odds of 11/4 but looks a long way off at the moment with the match moving at a fast pace and rain unlikely in Perth.
Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss put 21 on the board as they opened the innings without much alarm before the close of play, and Totesport have shortened Cook to 10/3 to be top England batsman. Strauss is also 10/3, but Cook looked more assured and should represent the better value. Mitchell Johnson thrives on this ground and showed more control than he was capable of in the First Test in Brisbane and he has shortened to 3/1 to be the top Australian bowler on a pitch he traditionally enjoys.
England are now odds on 1/3 favourites to win a first Ashes series Down Under since the 1986/87 series, with Australia drifting out to an industry best price wih Totesport at 7/1 and the draw is 10/3.
