New Zealand take on Sri Lanka on Friday morning as the group stages of the Cricket World Cup begin to draw to a close. Both sides have sealed their places in the quarter-finals already but the match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will go some way to deciding the final positions of the top four sides in Group A. Sri Lanka are favourites according to Victor Chandler bookmakers as they go in as 8/15 odds on, while New Zealand can be backed at odds of 11/8.
Both sides will be keen to finish in the top two of Group A as they will no doubt be keen to avoid a quarter-final clash with South Africa, who are currently top of Group B. The other places in Group B are not so clear cut and so it is not so obvious who other potential quarter-final opponents would be. It is an oddity that the match will be played in Mumbai as Sri Lanka are one of the home nations and had played their first five matches on home soil but they will still go in as strong favourites with most.
The Sri Lankans have won seven of the last ten ODIs against New Zealand and have an impressive winning record of 17-11 in matches played against the Black Caps on the sub-continent. They have been decent in the tournament so far but there is a feeling that they have plenty more to give after recording three wins, one defeat and one no result.
Mahela Jayawardene will be keen to kick on in the tournament after being given little chance to score runs since his century against Canada in the opening match and we fancy he could be worth a look at 9/2 to be top Sri Lanka batsman with VCBet on Friday. Victor Chandler also price Sri Lanka at tempting odds of 9/4 to score more sixes in the match than New Zealand and that is well worth a look when you consider they have the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara in their ranks.
New Zealand meanwhile have been quietly impressive with four wins and a single defeat so far but are seriously hampered by the loss of Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills to injury on Friday. They do boast the batting talent of Ross Taylor though and he is bang in form after his brutal 131 against Pakistan last week and a quickfire 74 against Canada at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. He is favourite to be top New Zealand batsman this week at odds of 4/1 with VictorChandler.com as he looks to add to his tournament tally of 212 runs.
It could also be worth backing the New Zealand opening pair to outscore the Sri Lanka openers at odds of 11/8 with VCBet as Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum continue to impress. But we fancy Sri Lanka to win the match and history is on their side as they have won the last three World Cup fixtures between the two.
