England hold the edge over the Australians in the Ashes series following their resounding win in the second test in Adelaide. They hold a 1-0 lead and know they need just one more win from the three remaining tests to retain the urn. They begin the bid for that win in the third test at the WACA in Perth in the early hours of Thursday morning. There is nothing to choose between the sides for the third test according to bookmakers, as Victor Chandler shortened Australia to 6/4 alongside England.
The previous test in Adelaide was as close to perfection as England could get as they thumped the Australians by an innings and 71 runs, thanks in large part to man of the match Kevin Pietersen who scored 227. Graeme Swann then wrapped up the Australian's second innings with 5-91 to ensure England head to Perth in buoyant mood and Ricky Ponting's Australia in disarray.
Kevin Pietersen is odds on to be the top England batsman in the third test with VC Bet as they offer him at odds of 10/3 at the moment, although the WACA pitch is expected to be a bit 'spicier' than those seen so far and should provide a serious test of cricket technique. Ian Bell looks good value at 11/2 to tough it out, as wickets appear likely to tumble on a pitch that is much more like its old self with pace and bounce. James Anderson returned to England briefly for the birth of his child and he is 9/4 with VictorChandler.com to be England's top bowler in this test, and he has been the stand out paceman in the Ashes series so far. England's only selection dilemma will be on who is going to replace the injured Stuart Broad, with Chris Tremlett and Tim Bresnan leading the way.
Australia have been beset my selection problems as Phil Hughes and unknown spinner Michael Beer, who has only 16 first class wickets at an average of 39, come in. Beer is 6/1 with VCBet to be the top Australian bowler as the job of replacing Shane Warne continues.
Mitchell Johnson should come back after being dropped for the second test and he boasts an excellent record at the WACA, taking at least five wickets in his three tests there, and looks good value at 10/3 to be the top Australian bowler - if he can get his radar right. Captain Ricky Ponting will be hoping his side bat a lot better than in the previous test match where he scored nine runs in two innings. His odds of scoring 30 runs or less in the first innings at the WACA are 5/4 with VCBet at the moment, while Mike Hussey looks a good bet at 9/2 to be top Australian batsman.
The pitch is expected to provide wickets and a result looks a near certainty, with the pitch curator suggesting the match could be over in four days. It is best to steer clear of the draw at 9/4, and it could go either way with so much at stake.
