Ireland still maintain slim hopes of qualifying for the Cricket World Cup knockout stages but must win their final two matches, starting with a tough fixture against South Africa on Tuesday morning. The match will be the first of the tournament at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and Ireland are priced as big outsiders at odds of 8/1 with William Hill, with South Africa hot favourites at 1/16.
Despite stunning England, Ireland have lost their other three matches and face an uphill task to finish in the top four in Group B at the moment. They certainly haven't embarrassed themselves though as they have pushed India and West Indies all the way in defeat but they must gain wins from their next matches against South Africa and Netherlands.
It looks to be a tough ask to beat the South Africans but the Irish will be boosted by their performance in losing by 44 runs to West Indies. That defeat was marred by the controversy surrounding the dismissal of Gary Wilson leg before wicket, apparently offering no shot, and we fancy the look of Wilson to be top Irish batsman at odds of 9/1 with Hills on Tuesday. Wilson hit 61 off 62 balls against the West Indies and he will want to post another big score against a test cricket playing nation this week.
The bowlers have continued to impress with young spinner George Dockrell an outstanding performer so far. Dockrell has adapted to one day international cricket quickly and has taken six wickets at 25.83 so far and is well worth a look at odds of 7/2 to be top Ireland bowler this week. There is a concern for Ireland however as Trent Johnston, who has taken six wickets at 19, is a doubt with injury once again.
South Africa meanwhile will be keen to secure a comfortable win after losing by six runs to England and then winning a thriller by three wickets against India on Sunday. They weathered a Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag batting storm early in the innings against India as Dale Steyn hit back to record figures of five for 50. The fearsome fast bowler now has 10 wickets at 13.70 in the tournament and he is hot favourite at odds of 2/1 with WilliamHill.com to be top South African bowler against Ireland
Imran Tahir remains a doubt through injury and is unlikely to feature against Ireland, particularly as South Africa look well set to qualify for the knockout stage and can go top of Group B with a win. AB de Villiers continues to impress with the bat, scoring 318 runs at an average of 106 in the tournament, and he is a very tempting 4/1 to be top South African batsman and 13/8 to score a fifty in the match.
With so much batting talent in the South African ranks it could be worth a look at a century being scored in the match at odds of 11/10 with Hills, and Ireland certainly look to face an uphill struggle against a side that will be brimming with confidence after the win over India.
