England face the daunting prospect of a five-match ODI series in India this month, although they have reason to be hopeful ahead of the first ODI in Hyderabad on Friday. India may start as favourites at 4/6 with William Hill but they are yet to win a one-dayer at the Deccan ground, while England look tempting at odds of 6/5 after their recent success in the warm-up matches.
Alastair Cook's men won both of the warm-up matches prior to the series in Hyderabad and we fancy they could well get off to a winning start here following their recent 4-0 Test and 3-0 ODI demolitions of India on English soil.
However, a series win in India looks a big ask as they take on the World Cup winners and the last two tours to India have resulted in a 5-0 (2008) and 5-1 (2006) drubbing. The match in Hyderabad would appear to offer England a good chance to get off to a win as India have lost all three of their one-day matches there.
Runs could be the order of the day, particularly as India fell only three runs short of Australia's mighty total of 350 two years ago and Hills go evens that a batsman scores a century in Friday's match.
There is a wealth of batting talent on both sides and a punt that could prove too tempting to turn down is Jonny Bairstow to be top England batsman in the match at odds of 7/1. The Yorkshire batsman has taken to international cricket like a duck to water and his 104 off 53 balls in the second warm up match has made him a shoe-in for Friday's match, while his match-winning 41 not out against India in Cardiff last month will have done his chances no harm at all.
Spin of course will play a huge part in this series and it is Ravichandran Ashwin who is 11/4 favourite to be India's top bowler this week, while Graeme Swann is available at the same price to be top England bowler.
It will be interesting to see if India's batsmen take on Swann, particularly as Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are out of the series, while Virender Sehwag is likely to miss the first three matches. That puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the line up and we fancy Virat Kohli could be the man to step up.
Kohli scored a beautiful 107 off 93 balls against England at Cardiff last month and he was in devastating form for Royal Challengers Bangalore recently as he helped them reach the Champions League final. He scored 70 off 36 balls and 84 of 49 in the last few weeks and he looks good value at odds of 4/1 to be top India batsman with WilliamHill.com.
If Kohli is in that sort of form during this series, England could be in for a tough ride and while we fancy England to get off to a winning start on Friday, the series win could be asking a little too much.
