Joe Root Odds On To Captain England To An Ashes Win

Alastair Cook has called it a day as England's Test captain and it seems likely that Joe Root will be named as his successor ahead of a massive year that includes an Ashes Series in Australia....

Root To The Fore

Cook won the Ashes twice as captain and despite being much-maligned in some quarters of the press, the 32-year-old carried the job with a quiet dignity after he took over in 2012 and he continued to churn out runs - 4,844 runs at an average of 46.57 as captain to be exact.

Cook will continue to be available for selection for England and Root is anticipated to be named as the next England captain before the squad leaves for the limited overs tour of the West Indies on 22nd February, albeit they don't actually play another Test until South Africa visit Lord's in July.

Root has already racked up 53 caps in the Test arena and the 26-year-old could be the England captain for years to come, with Ladbrokes going 6/4 for Root to be captain longer than Cook, who won 24 (40.67%) of his 59 Tests in charge.

Furthermore, Root has scored eleven hundreds in Test cricket but it will be interesting to see what the pressure of captaincy has on his average of 52.80. The talented right-hander is 6/4 to break Cook's record of twelve centuries as captain and he certainly appears to have time on his side.

To Win The Ashes?

Of more immediate concern for Root is how he turns a team that lost a record eight Tests during the last calendar year into an Ashes-winning unit. He is 1/3 to win the Ashes as captain at some point during his career, while he is even-money to guide England to the top of the world rankings.

Root needs to stamp his authority on a team that has lost a bit of direction and they are currently 13/5 to win the 2017/18 Ashes Series in Australia (Bet 365)...
