Yorkshire

Last Season: 3rd
2017 County Championship Odds: 11/5
Prediction: 1st

The 2014 and 2015 champions came up short in their quest for three in a row last season and their title defence was a little disappointing in truth. There has been much change over the summer as the recently retired Andrew Gale replaces Jason Gillespie as Head Coach and Gary Ballance is captain, while Peter Handscomb comes over from Australia off the back of a bucket load of runs at both Test and domestic level.
Verdict: Will be desperate to right the wrongs of last season and difficult to oppose. The nature of the County Championship format, with plenty of four-day games early and then late on in the season ensures that their superb seamers will enjoy the best of conditions.

Middlesex

Last Season: Champions
2017 County Championship Odds: 7/2
Prediction: 3rd

Middlesex ended a 23-year wait for a County Championship title with their stunning win on the final day of the last campaign. Toby Roland-Jones was the hero with a hat-trick in the season finale and he will be pressing his case for further international honours with England.
Verdict: Edged home in the end and Roland-Jones will carry a heavy workload again, while the appointment of Daniel Vettori as a T20 coach hints that they are shifting their focus to silverware in the shorter formats. Can they compete on all fronts?

Warwickshire

Last Season: 6th
2017 County Championship Odds: 11/2
Prediction: 6th

The 2012 champions reacted to another disappointing campaign by sacking Dougie Brown and there is now a very Warwickshire-centric look to the hierarchy, with Ashley Giles appointed as Director of Cricket, Jim Troughton as first team coach and Ian Bell now captain.

The Bears boasted the best bowling attack in the division in terms of bowling points in 2016, thanks in large part to the ageless Jeetan Patel and Keith Barker, although the loss of Varun Chopra is a big blow to the top of the batting order.
Verdict: There is a feeling that the veteran quartet of Jonathan Trott, Bell, Patel and Barker will have to flourish, particularly after new signing Olly Stone suffered another injury set-back.

Surrey

Last Season: 5th
2017 County Championship Odds: 5/1
Prediction: 4th

Surrey have once again been busy during the off-season, snapping up Scott Borthwick and Mark Stoneman from the unfortunate Durham. Kumar Sangakkara again provides experience to assist captain Gareth Batty and much will be expected of the talented Jason Roy.
Verdict: A team that has consistently fallen short since last winning the title in 2002 makes little appeal at the prices.

Somerset

Last Season: 2nd
2017 County Championship Odds: 8/1
Prediction: 2nd

Somerset were desperately unlucky to only finish second last season and they have replaced the considerable experience of Chris Rogers with the astute signings of Steven Davies and Dean Elgar, with both expected to shine at Taunton.

The West Country ground is a heaven for batsmen and it is no coincidence that the evergreen Marcus Trescothick has been amongst the top-five run scorers in Division One for the last two seasons running, with Sky Bet going 16/1 for Trescothick to be top batsman again.

Meanwhile, James Hildreth has racked up 2,727 runs in the past two seasons and he is 20/1 to be top batsman (SkyBet.com).
Verdict: Excellent batting unit and an improving bowling attack. Won't be disrupted by too many international call-ups and seem to be underrated by bookmakers.

Hampshire

Last Season: 8th
2017 County Championship Odds: 12/1
Prediction: 5th

Hampshire were granted a reprieve from relegation by Durham's subsequent points deduction and the South Coast county will again line up in the top-flight.
Verdict: Look far better equipped for Division One this time thanks to the addition of the overseas George Bailey, as well as the Kolpak duo of Kyle Abbott and Rilee Roussouw.

Lancashire

Last Season: 7th
2017 County Championship Odds: 16/1
Prediction: 7th

It is a period of transition for Lancashire as they cope with numerous departures and Glenn Chapple will hope to develop enough of a team spirit to keep them in the division.
Verdict: The loss of Alviro Petersen has been offset by the addition of Shiv Chanderpaul but another tough season awaits.

Essex

Last Season: Won Division Two
2017 County Championship Odds: 25/1
Prediction: 8th

The newly promoted Essex face a huge task back in Division One and it is difficult to see how they can cope with the retirements of two players who contributed so much to their promotion push last season.
Verdict: Graham Napier and David Masters have both retired, which ensures bottom spot and a swift return to Division Two beckons.
