England will look to justify their world number one Test cricket ranking when they head to the United Arab Emirates to take on Pakistan this month. Andrew Strauss's men embark on a three Test series, beginning on January 17th, and start as 10/11 favourites in the series betting with William Hill.
The touring side are looking to win a seventh Test series on the trot but they face their biggest challenge yet when they try to adapt to the alien conditions of the sub-continent. Those conditions could just give Pakistan an edge as the UAE is a home away from home for them while they are still unable to play matches in Pakistan.

We fancy England could be caught cold in the opening Test match in Dubai on January 17th as they might find it takes a while to adapt to the low, slow wickets there. England have only played once on the sub-continent since Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss took charge of the England team in 2009, with that sole success coming in the form of a 2-0 win against Bangladesh.
Pakistan comfortably beat Bangladesh on their own patch recently and Saeed Ajmal again showed his worth. The spinner is rocketing up the bowlers' world rankings and he is currently 9/4 favourite to be top Pakistan bowler in the series, which looks about right considering he took eight wickets against Sri Lanka in Dubai in October.
How England play Ajmal will be crucial and the way they attempted to bat against spin during the World Cup last year will be a huge concern. Very few players have shown the necessary technique to cope with unorthodox spin like Ajmal's, although Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan look the best equipped to cope and they could be worth a look to be top England batsman in the series - with Bell priced 5/1 and Morgan available at 12/1 with WilliamHill.com.
Graeme Swann will be a key man in the bowling attack and Strauss has indicated that Swann is likely to be their sole spinner in the side. It means Monty Panesar will have to wait for his return to the side, with Swann the 7/4 favourite to be top England bowler.
Pakistan's players though are adept at playing spin, with Younis Khan 10/3 to be top Pakistan batsman following his 200 not out against Bangladesh recently, while captain Misbah-ul-Haq can be backed at 9/2.
Misbah has turned Pakistan into an organised outfit and they went unbeaten in Test series in 2011, winning four and drawing one. They look decent value to take something from this series and should be looking to right some wrongs after their controversial 2010 tour of England, with the correct series score of 1-1 available at a best priced 4/1 with Hills.
