England were backed in to even money from 11/8 with bookmaker William Hill on Friday morning, following the first day's play of the second test in Adelaide, that saw Australia reduced to 245 all out in their first innings. Ricky Ponting's team are on the drift for the series and can now be backed at odds of 7/4, with a drawn series 7/2. In the match odds, Andrew Strauss's team are now 4/5 favourites to gain a 1-0 lead in the Ashes. Strauss and Alistair Cook survived one over at the end of the day's play and will be looking to put up a big score on Saturday.
The average score at Adelaide is in the high 300's, so the 245 scored by Australia was a poor return, even more so given that Ricky Ponting won the toss and chose to bat. England got off to an amazing start and at one point Austrailia had no runs on the board for the loss of two wickets, with Ricky Ponting out to a first ball duck. Michael Clarke didn't fair much better with the bat scoring just two before James Anderson took his wicket and reducing the Aussies to two for three wickets. Opener Shane Watson and the in-form Michael Hussey steadied the ship both scoring half centuries whilst Michael North and Brad Haddin both added valuable runs. However, Hussey fell seven runs short of his century when Graeme Swann took his wicket and the Aussies only managed to add another 38 runs to finish all out for 245.
James Anderson was the pick of the England attack, picking up four wickets for 51 runs from his 19 overs. All of the strike bowlers picked up at least one wicket, with Graeme Swann much improved from the first test picking up two wickets. The spinner has been backed in to 5/4 to be England's top bowler for the series as a result with William Hill.
With the weather set fair, England will be hoping for repeat performance of their second innings with the bat in Brisbane, with double centurion then Alistair Cook the 4/1 second favourite to top score in the second test. Fellow opener and captain Andrew Strauss can be backed at odds of 4/2, whilst Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott are both also 4/1 shots.
Australia have it all to do in the second test and the Aussie captain Ricky Ponting looked visibly rattled at the end of the days play, exchanging angry words with Andrew Strauss as the players left the field at stumps. Australia are now 7/2 with Hills from pre-match odds of 9/4, whilst the draw is the biggest drifter, out to 9/4 from even money.
