Harrahs Casino Announces Plans to Upgrade
Casino giant Harrah's Entertainment said Thursday it plans to spend $550 million to expand and upgrade its namesake casino and hotel complex in Atlantic City, N.J. The Las Vegas-based casino operator said in a statement that it will add a 964-room hotel tower, a 17,000-square-foot entertainment complex, a spa, nightclub, indoor pool, lounge and retail stores.

When complete, the tower will boost Harrah's Atlantic City's hotel capacity by nearly 60 percent, the company said in a statement, including 13 so-called "super suites" and 183 suites.
The expansion also will add a buffet area. The existing buffet will be used for slot machines and card tables.

Harrah's expects construction of the entertainment complex to be finished by the end of 2006. The tower is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2008.
Including four properties in Mississippi and Louisiana damaged or closed since hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Harrah's Entertainment owns or manages 43 casinos in three countries, primarily under the Harrah's, Caesars and Horseshoe brand names.
