Braehmer favourite to beat Cleverly in WBA light heavyweight title bout

Nathan Cleverly is bidding to win the WBA light-heavyweight title tonight, when he goes toe-to-toe with German Juergen Braehmer.

Braehmer, who has won 48 of his 50 professional bouts, has been the WBA champion since 2013 and with Cleverly's last fight being a points defeat back in October, Braehmer is the slight favourite to win the fight (8/13 with Betfair).

Tips Braehmer to win on points    Best Bet @ 13 / 10

Cleverly (13/8 with Bet 365) will need to make use of his height advantage and longer reach, he can make it difficult for Braehmer to land cleanly and really pick his own shots wisely.

Braehmer is known for having a good chin, he can take punishment well so if Cleverly is to become the new champion his strategy must be to keep his distance and land accurately and effectively. Braehmer will also be difficult to outmanoeuvre due to him being a southpaw so it may take a few rounds for Cleverly to get going in the fight and really suss out the threat that Braehmer poses.

Cleverly himself was a world champion back in 2013, but he lost the WBO belt during a defeat to Kovalev. If Cleverly becomes WBA champion tonight, there could possibly be a rematch between the two and victory in that one for Cleverly would really lay down a marker in the division. During an interview with Sky Sports, Kovalev backed the Welshman to be victorious and predicted a points win (5/2 with Betfred).

Braehmer has the advantage of fighting with his own crowd behind him, he has only fought outside of his homeland once in his professional career and Cleverly will have to deal with the atmosphere that he faces and ensure that it doesn't have a negative effect on his game-plan and performance.

A defeat tonight would most-likely be one defeat too many for Nathan Cleverly. If he is unable to return home with the WBA strap around his waist his future prospects of fighting for anything at world-championship level are more or less ended. A consecutive defeat here would be a crushing blow to his career but on the flip side, Cleverly has been singled out as the favourite among the likes of Kovalev and Johnny Nelson.

The tip and prediction here would be a narrow points victory for Braehmer (13/10 with Betfair). It's in his own back-yard, Cleverly is coming into the fight off the back of a defeat and he has the pressure of knowing that a defeat in this one would surely end his chances of becoming a world-champion in the future. Cleverly has the physical advantage as he weighed in higher than Braehmer alongside him being 3 inches taller than the German. Nathan Cleverly faces a tough test, a victory will be hard to come-by in this one.
