Betting has been synoymous with boxing throughot history, albeit not always legally. Thankfully there are plenty of bookmakers that offer good betting markets on the world's best boxing contests these days and hopefully this guide will help explain what is on offer.
Considering the general concept with boxing is two people knocking seven bells out of each other in a ring the world boxing scene is rather complicated and convaluted, so it's best to do your homework before placing any bets. Each weight division will have different belts to win via the different boxing federations. So despite David Haye's recent points win over the giant Russian Valuev gave the Londoner a world heavyweight title, and his subsequent beating of Audley Harrison to retain the title, there are two other belts currently held in the World Heavyweight Boxing division.
The most popular fights to bet on will be the one that feature British boxers. The aforementioned David Haye has plenty of support and there'll be plenty of markets available on his next fight against John Ruiz when it is announced. Another British fighter who is getting plenty of interest is Olympic Silver medalist Amir Khan, who is taking the light welterweight division by storm. The boy from Bolton is reportedly being lined up for a unification fight against unbeaten WBO champion Timothy Bradley some time in 2010.
Ricky 'The Hitman' Hatton has been the biggest star in British Boxing for a number of years, he has managed to grab the attention of the British fans through thick and thin over a number of years. The Manchester fighter is already a legend in his own right but Ricky Hatton is set to return to the ring this Summer for a fight against an as yet unnamed opponent and its sure to be a massive event for fans and punters.
The biggest fight of 2010 is likely to be that of Manny Pacquaio v Floyd Mayweather Jnr (if it ever happens) as the two best boxers in the world face-off for the title of pound-for-pound king. The date is not yet confirmed but it is likely to be the biggest fight in the history of the sport should it happen in terms of money and the betting interest will be huge.
Should you be interested in having a bet on any big boxing match just go to the bookies section on this site and select a bookmaker which you would like to have an account with. Upon registration you will be entitled to a Free Boxing Sport Bet once you have had your first bet with the bookmaker you have selected.
Win-Draw-Win Market
The most popular bet in boxing terms is simply to back the boxer you think will win the fight. The odds are laid out exactly as they would where there is a possibility of three outcomes, with either boxer winning or an unlikely draw. You will find that the odds can be quite short where the favourite is concerned with the majority of fights as they are rarely equal contests.
Round Betting
Have a bet on how many rounds you think there will be in the fight. The bookmaker will set up a line as to how many they think there will be and will offer you odds on whether there will be over or under those amount of rounds. There are usually 12 rounds in professional bouts but make sure you know how many rounds there will be before placing your bet.
Method of Victory Odds
You can bet on the way you think the fight will be won and bookmakers will put up odds on whether the fight will be won by knockout or on points, or even by technical knockout. It's a fun bet to have if you want better value odds on a fight. Check the records of the boxers before placing your bet, as some boxers may have weaker chins than the other.
