Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers Betting: Cam Newton to shine in rookie battle

It will be two rookie quarterbacks going up against each other this Sunday as the Carolina Panthers take on the Minnesota Vikings. Cam Newton will be under the spotlight for the Panthers while Christian Ponder will line out for the Vikings. The similarities really stop there for these two because so far Newton has been outstanding with his play and impressed everyone in the league while Ponder is making just his second career start.

Even though they may have a 2-5 record, Newton has turned the Panthers into a great team to watch this season on offence. Many suggested it would take him time to adjust to the NFL but he has proven already that he is going to be something very special in this league.

He can throw the ball beautifully and has great accuracy while also making plays with his feet and rushing for touchdowns. The ability he has is going to make him one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in a few years’ time.

Throwing for over 300 yards a game, Newton is the strongest candidate for rookie of the year at the end of the season and it would be a big surprise if he didn’t land the title.

Ponder was also a first-round selection like Newton but he hasn’t been thrust into the action as fast. Donavan McNabb was benched two games ago and the rookie was handed his chance to see out the rest of the season.

Ponder is not going to drastically change this campaign for the Vikings and they are still going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL but he did show promise in his first full game against the Green Bay Packers. He helped his team compile a season-best 435 total yards and threw for two touchdowns.

These two teams are very close in ability at the moment so this is a tough one to call. Minnesota have Adrian Peterson in the backfield that they can call upon to take the pressure of Ponder and if Peterson gets going he could put up well over 100 yards. If it does, however, come down to the performance of the quarterbacks, Newton will win hands down and he has shown that he can lead his team to victory.

The Vikings are also 0-3 on the road this season while Newton will want to put on very good display for the home fans in Carolina so expect a great game from him.
