It’s a big NFC South match-up this Sunday as the Carolina Panthers head to the Georgia Dome to take on the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams haven’t got off to the best starts and after last weekend’s Week 5 they have already fallen behind in the division.
Atlanta (2-3) won the NFC South last season and had the best record in the conference but this won’t be happening this year. They don’t look like the same team as 12 months ago and have been sluggish in their first few games. They went 14-0 up against the Green Bay Packers at the Georgia Dome last Sunday but couldn’t get the job done and eventually lost the game 25-14.
Quarterback Matt Ryan has not been performing well and has only seven touchdowns to go along with six interceptions. Ryan hasn’t been sharp so far and looks to have taken a big step back this season. He was touted as a quarterback who could move into the elite level someday but at the moment he is nowhere near it. Wide receiver Julio Jones is also set to miss Sunday’s game so Ryan has a big offensive weapon missing.
Another problem for Atlanta is that they try to rely on their ground game to dominate matches but this hasn’t been the case in recent weeks and they have had trouble getting it going. Running back Michael Turner rushed for just 56 yards against the Green Bay Packers last week.
The Carolina Panthers (1-4) have the worst record in the division but there have been major positives for this team. They are much better than their standing suggests and they have ran some of the best teams in the league close already. The Panthers lost to the Packers by just a touchdown and just three points to the New Orleans Saints last Sunday.
Rookie quarterback Cam Newton is also looking as if he is going to be something very special in the NFL. He has adapted to the league much quicker than anyone expected and has really impressed. He has already thrown for seven touchdowns and is second in the league behind Adrian Peterson is scoring rushing touchdowns. Newton is a serious threat with the plays he can make and is already averaging over 300 yards a game.
In the match odds for this game, Atlanta are offered at 1/2 by Unibet and Carolina are priced at 8/5. In the handicap market, the Falcons are -4 point favourites over the Panthers at 18/19. Carolina have covered the point spread in every game so far this season except one which is worth noting. They are playing some good stuff but have been denied a big victory so far, but it may just come this weekend.
Tip: Back Carolina Panthers (-4) at 11/13 with Unibet.
