The New England Patriots and New York Jets renew one of the most heated rivalries in the NFL this Sunday. The two AFC East competitors go head-to-head in Foxborough and we are sure to see an intense divisional match-up. The Patriots routed the Jets 45-3 in the regular season at Gillette Stadium last year but then crucially lost to them in the divisional playoffs as the Jets went onto the AFC Championship game. Coach Bill Belichick will surely be out for revenge on Rex Ryan and the Jets when they take to the field this Sunday.
Unibet make New England the short priced 1/5 favourites in the match odds while New York are priced at 7/2. In the handicap market, the Patriots are -9.5 favourites over the Jets at evens.
After suffering their first defeat to the Buffalo Bills since 2003 two weeks ago, the Patriots got back to winning ways last Sunday with a good win over the Oakland Raiders out on the west coast. Many had predicted the Patriots to struggle against a Raiders team who had run all over the Jets the week before, but in the end New England were comfortable 12 point winners.
While the frailties of the Patriots defence have been written about extensively the last few weeks and clear for all to see, it is their offence that is keeping them on a winning record. Tom Brady has been outstanding so far and he has already thrown for 1553 yards for 13 touchdowns, and is on course to beat Dan Marino’s passing record for a season. The offence has been explosive with Brady finding weapons Wes Welker and Deion Branch regularly, who have over 50 receptions between them already.
But what was most important from the victory over the Raiders was that the Patriots finally got their running game going and currently BenJarvus Green-Ellis leads the rushing attack with 197 yards and three touchdowns while Danny Woodhead has 115 yards and Stevan Ridley has 148 yards. The Patriots will be looking to move the ball on the ground against a Jets defence that is struggling with the run at the moment.
However, it not just the Jets defence that is struggling at the moment but the whole team. The offence has been unproductive and Mark Sanchez has just six touchdowns and five interceptions already. They also seem to be not able to pound the ball on the ground and are averaging just 3 rushing yards a play. The Jets started out the season a healthy 2-0 but now they have been pegged back to 2-2 after defeats to the Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens. Last Sunday night in particular they looked totally out of sorts in their 34-17 loss to the Ravens and they could be in for more trouble once again this weekend.
Coach Rex Ryan will likely be mouthing off in the build-up about the Jets playoff victory in New England last season but there is no way there will be a repeat of this. The Patriots offence is rolling along nicely at the moment and they would love to really torch the Jets defence this Sunday and get payback for last season. The Jets are also on their third straight, tough road game and they already look as if they have nothing left in the tank.
