The NFL regular season is now over and with the Playoffs about to get underway, the 12 remaining teams in contention to win Superbowl XLIV will have their eyes firmly set on a trip to Miami on Sunday 7th February.
The Indianapolis Colts are the bookmakers favoruites to win Superbowl after an impressive regular season record, finishing 14-2 and clinching the AFC's #1 seed ahead of the play offs and will be hoping for a return trip to Dolphin Stadium, the scene of their Superbowl XLI triumph in 2007. However, despite winning the AFC in style and being the 16/5 favourites to win the big game with Bet365, the Colts must defy the jinx of the top seed if they are to triumph. Since the turn of the new millennium, only one team ranked number one following the regular season has gone on to win the Superbowl (New England Patriots in 2003) in ten attempts. This stat does not bode well for the New Orleans Saints either, who are the number one ranked team in the NFC and are the joint 4/1 second favoruites to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy.
Despite home field advantage in the playoffs for the Colts and Saints, together with impressive regular season records, which has sees both teams at the top of the bookies Superbowl betting, recent history suggests that the other ten teams have every right to be confident about going all the way but the question remains who will be triumphant?
The San Diego Chargers currently share second favourtism with the Saints at 4/1 and are the team headed to the post season in the best form having won all of their last eleven games. They are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the playoffs but have never surpassed the AFC Championship game. However, recent failures could act as a motivator for the Chargers and provide essential experience this time around, they have a solid defense and an explosive offense and will prove difficult opponents for anyone and could go all the way.
Also in the AFC, the New England Patriots cannot ruled and despite not looking as good this time around as when winning recent Superbowls, the odds compilers could be left red faced offering 11/1 at this stage about a team who has been there and done three times in the past eight years.
The NFC looks equally as competitive as the AFC with both the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys looking like huge threats to the New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys won their last three regular season games to clinch a place in the playoffs and are well fancied by many to continue that good form all the way to Superbowl 44. However, Wade Phillips' side must overcome a run of five straight play-off defeats dating back to 1996 if they are to progress past the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round, but the last time the Cowboys did win a post-season game they went on to win the Superbowl!
The Minnesota Vikings, lead by veteran Quarterback, Brett Favre, are a huge threat to all comers in this conference with their no nonsense defense and an offense loaded with a point scoring weapons. They finished the season 12-4and will be confident of winning their first ever Superbowl and at 8/1 will have plenty of backers.
